on July 4th (1826)!

They were: Thomas Jefferson & John Adams..

While 5 years later James Monroe also died on July 4, 1831.

July 4th..pretty dang big day in America, then & now!

Jefferson's last words were "Adams lives!" ; the two had reconciled after decades of feuding. Little did Jefferson know that Adams had died several hours before.

Actually it was the opposite...“It is a great day. It is a good day.” He died in the early evening, hours after Jefferson. According to tradition, Adams uttered the final words, “Thomas Jefferson survives,” unaware of the fact that his longtime friend had just passed away.
