in a few brutes to either side of our line. Morris may be doing a little better than Venables on that part.
We could always use more, though.

We were not bringing them in until 4 years ago in sufficient numbers! This years senior class has 2 OL and 0 DL and 1 of the OL came is a FB and played on the DL until 2 years ago! Last years Senior class had 1 OL and 1 DL!
We are just now getting the numbers in the trenches that we need!
Next years Senior class has 4 OL and 5 DL , if VB leaves early move 1 DL to this year.

Factor in a bit of bad luck too ...

JK Jay would be anchoring the OL today alongside Brandon Thomas if he doesn't get hurt. We're still feeling the effects of the coaching change and the 12-player 2009 class.

He's full grown isn't he?! I'd fight him though. At 5 ft 8 and 160 lbs I think I'd have a chance. Well just before he ate me then pancaked a gt lineman.

squatting below parallel is not functional strength, though? Right?

Aren't all squats good for knees and back?
Nov 11, 2013, 5:42 PM

I read some power lifters opinion a long time ago that done right deep squats (below parallel?) is the best way to beef up knees. I expect a lineman needs powerful spring from his knees off squat at the snap. No? (I'm no expert)

I'd be willing to say, "not being an expert myself", that bringing 585 lbs worth of thrust from a 3 point stance into a defensive lineman is pretty effective.

You would be absolutely correct, and a DL won't give a whit about proper technique when he is getting flattened. It is one of those Oh SHI- moments as a DL is getting pancaked, even as a result of "bad technique". I have seen it up close and personal. Technique helps accomplish objectives, but it's not the only factor. The lines of scrimmage are a combat zone, and anything goes. I like the looks of Crowder. He has that "killer" look about him, and I want him to impose the Tigers' will on the bad guys.

That would depend on how much thrust is your opponent shoving back at them. Rest assure that I wouldn't want to be in the middle of that collision!!!

That's a long standing debate.

Especially how far to go. Many believe in ATG (### to ground) squats, others believe that causes too much stress on the knees. If I go lower than parallel, I do lighter weight, higher reps. For heavier sets, I stay parallel. Everyone does it differently it seems.
Also, many players do hang cleans to work on explosiveness but I'm sure squats help as well.

I'm tolling shakinthesouthland. Below parallel squats are good for the knees and low back assuming your trunk remains fixed as it moves from start to finish and are perhaps the best thing for the mind. Crowder can probably squat 700 pounds raw as indicated by his 420 hang clean. Remember this wasn't developed by the Clemson Strength and Conditioning department as he demonstrated the clean in high school. He is a freak athlete and will terrorize the ACC for 4 years.
This should be the standard for all Clemson offensive lineman. All of the guys on our roster over 250 lbs should be easily able to achieve this squat during their time at Clemson.

Glad to see we have an OL with some push towards the goal line vs. stepping backwards on the first step.
Now we need some men on defense that can BP 500 lbs.
Go Tigers!

I feel safe in saying he can do much more than that squatting. I'm 200 and I can squat upwards of 500 I've never really maxed out.
And he did it with plenty of ease

is very impressive. Most 6' 2" 300+ pound OL should be capable of 3-5 reps w/ 585 (I like that he broke parallel) Squats are a great overall strength exercise.

Thank you for your obvious knowledge on squatting... do you realize how many guys squat 585 lbs for 3-5 repetitions in the United States? That means the guy squats around 630 lbs. There are only a handful plus a few guys that can do this below parallel. Any other type of squat is actually not one. End of story. They are indeed a "great overall strength exercise" when performed correctly.

Powerlifting was my sport 1981-97. I have scoliosis so I started having pinched nerve issues with squat and deadlift by 1983, so I became mostly a bencher by default. My back often reminds me about those days.

Rone was this strong coming in, as evidenced by his 420 pound hang-clean in high school
