He looked like he could suit up and give it a go. One of my all-time favorite players. Really hope he gets another shot.

I don’t get how undrafted guys like Calvin Munson from the San Diego State Aztecs get a roster spot with the NY Giants whilst the likes of Ben Boulware get the shaft after winning a both a national championship and the Jack Lambert trophy. Like how the ####!? The Giants defense was so thin by week 2 that Munson got his first start, replacing BJ Goodson! The saints, jets, colts, raiders, 49er, etc. - ALL need linebackers. He should have never wasted time with the Panthers organization.

I swear on everything, I blame whatever agency these players choose to represent them 80% of the time in these situations.

Munson is taller, heavier, and faster than Boulware***

Re: Munson is taller, heavier, and faster than Boulware***

Pro Day numbers:

Calvin Munson

Height: 6ft 1/2”
Weight: 241
40: 4.79
3-cone: 7.20
20yd shuttle: 4.39
Bench: 225x25

Ben Boulware

Height: 6ft 1/8”
Weight: 238
40: 4.85
3-cone: 7.02
20yd shuttle: 4.43
Bench: 225x20

They both basically the same in every metric that matters. Ben was faster in the 3-cone, played stiffed competition in college, won more awards, including the national championship. And Ben was only a starter for 2 years, Calvin started for three. They both had 116 total tackles as seniors. I guess the Jack Lambert is just a participation trophy? Could have sworn that goes to the most outstanding linebacker in college football. Calvin Munson only made 1st team all-mountain west in one year of college. Ugh.

I’m a Giants fan, went to all but two home games this year and Calvin is not a better linebacker than Ben. At least not so much better that he should be making $470k a year for the next 3 years while Ben rakes leaves at his parents’ house in Anderson. The whole thing sucks.

College awards, both individual and team, mean squat to NFL.

Jan 12, 2018, 9:27 AM

Also "basically the same" in every metric just isn't true.

.05 in a 40 time is absolutely huge. 5 more reps on the bench is considerably more. Ben was much better on the 3-cone, but for a LB the 20yd shuttle is a better indicator. Their heights and weights, yeah that's splitting hairs, but Munson unquestionably tested better. His jumping stats were also 2 inches better on the vert and 6 inches better on the broad jump.

I agree that the NFL's selection strategy is flawed, but these coaches are supremely confident to a fault. They believe that they can turn anyone athletic into a high-level football player. This leads them to selecting the best athletes first and foremost.

I believe that Jeff Davis was also too short and too slow, but he lead Tampa in tackles for about five years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jeff Davis was Ben's size and speed 35 years ago.

Jan 12, 2018, 11:13 AM

I love Boulware and hoped he could stick in the NFL,but I certainly understand why he hasn't.

Ben's just not measuring up to what the NFL needs and wants in today's game.

He's a lot like Tajh Boyd in that respect.

He's back in Anderson, going to be opening up a gym soon. It's a cycling type class that he's going to lead, it will be around the downtown Anderson area.

Not sure if he is still pursuing the NFL thing though, forgot to add that. Don't think any teams have been in contact
