cycle 22 shorts. The best I've come up with so far are lever action, Henry or Browning. Just wondering if any of you have had any luck with any semiauto varieties that will cycle the shorts.
I'm looking for a good critter removal option, that won't alarm the neighbors.

Have thought of the whisper fusion, but not sure if that will take out a 40lb beaver. That's my most recent casualty.

My critter removal option, in a wooded neighborhood is an integrally suppressed ruger 10/22 thats way quieter than my air rifle. I’ve yet to run across a semi that will reliably cycle shorts but admittedly haven’t tried many

I don't know if you are interested or not but I have a Remington model 24 22 cal. for shorts only. I purchased it from a co-worker of my sons in 2014 and have only shot it a few time and it shoots fine. Its an older gun made by remington arms on a browning patient dated Oct. 24,1916. If you are interested call me at 864 313 1081.

That's a classic gun, thanks for the offer, but I'm leaning towards something that will also handle the LR.

I also have a Benjamin Break Barrel pellet rifle that has a rifled barrel that I use for reducing the squirrel population around my house but, depending on the type of pellets you use, it can make as much noise as my Ruger 10-22-LR. My Benjamin Break Barrel is also used for hog hunting, and again depending on the pellet used, it has a velocity of 1000 FPS with the more expensive alloy pellets, and those are the ones that make the most noise when used.

That's a model 42M-B, not M-M.

I can’t speak for anything other than my 10/22 which won’t cycle quiets, need another 100-200 FPS to cycle it. There seems to be a decent increase in sound with a step up from quiets to slightly faster but still subsonic rounds. There are 10/22 mods to do that will allow cci quiets to cycle though.

I wouldn't never buy a rifle or pistol that only shoots shorts. Shorts are for killing those barn rats, and I don't have a barn, so no need for 22 shorts. My Ruger 10-22 won't eject short rounds!!!

I have a Ruger 10-22 rifle with a 25 round clip loaded with 22 LR hollow point rounds, and will empty all 25 rounds as fast as you pull the trigger!!!

My older Remington .22 semi-auto will shoot shorts, longs and long rifle. I'll check the model number when I get a chance

Certain makers make 22 semi auto rifle that will shoot longs, LR, and shorts, but I have heard, but not positive bc I've never had one, but I heard that shooting LR all the time will wear out the ejection spring, but I don't know for sure if it's true!!!

Lever action is the way to go. Henry's are good guns. I

tried multiple semi-autos with shorts (or sub-sonics in general) and never got one to shoot more than twice without jamming trying to eject the fired shell.

Yep, that's why I'm interested in the shorts. I have a Stevens 22/410 single shot, and the short 22s sound like an air rifle. I believe I'm going to go with the Henry Golden Boy, its a tube load that will hold about 17 shorts. Pretty accurate to about 75 yards.

Probably your best bet. I love my Golden Boy. Semis (and I have several) generally struggle cycling shorts or sub sonic. Bolt action would be my second recommendation. If it were just squirrels, pellet would work. Just bought a new Crossman break-barrel and it’s been rainin’ fancy tailed tree rats in my back yard.
