Am I missing something with this Irma deal?

Sep 10, 2017, 9:33 PM

Live in Greenville. All schools closed. Look on WYFF and they have it as a Cat 2 storm with winds in the 20-30 mph range. To me that doesn't sound very serious.

I think they should be in school- but I have been told there is a SC law that prohibits buses from operating with winds at or over 30 mph- thus - schools out.

Clemson's cancelled classes tomorrow also, an hour ago.***

For the Clemson area they are calling for up to 7 inches of rain, and wind gusts of up to 50 mph tomorrow.

south of them right now.

Experience something like that once & you wouldn't question the decision - too much liability and logistics involved.

And always better safe than sorry.

Just my opinion with involvement in about 6 of these things. This one had the possibility of being crazy devastating.

I understand it for Tampa but I don't live in Tampa. My question was based off the Upstate

Up to 7 inches of rain in one day, wind gusts of up to 50 mph, tornado threats, and potential power outages. I for one would rather play it safe in those situations.

Yeah because there's no better way to sell gas than to keep a lot of people home instead of going to work and school.

Guess that's why most gas stations in Florida ran out of fuel multiple times.

I understand. Could be lots of weather in the Upstate area

And there's also the concern of power outages in addition to the wind and rain. They are expecting a lot of power outages across South Carolina tomorrow.

I've been through a few of these and like the op above, it ain't fun. Thing is, you may not experience anything where you are but 20 miles away they have wind damage or a flash flood. No one can predict when, where or how bad so you have to operate from an abundance of caution.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I teach in the district, gave this some thought

Sep 10, 2017, 11:29 PM

Winds of 30 and gusting to 40 or even 50 is a tough liability on thousands of kids standing around bus stops, near trees, flying debris coming around. You get one kid hit by something and you've got serious trouble. I say it's probably a good call from a legal standpoint. Generally, people underestimate what wind can do with debris and the energy it carries. Every single school district in the area, and all private schools seem to be in universal agreement.

The kids are celebrating. I know my 5 yr old was all kind of jacked up when he found out. Nothing like being a kid and finding out school is cancelled. Man I miss that feeling of joy.

I felt that 'school kid giddiness' Saturday night (and longer) - even with sitting in traffic for over an hour trying to leave the stadium!

Good thing I had a full tank of gas and plenty of water... ??

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

Re: Am I missing something with this Irma deal?

Sep 10, 2017, 11:57 PM

A lot of it stems from opening schools as shelters for those who have evacuated from other places.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not too long ago they cancelled because it was cold!

Sep 11, 2017, 12:04 AM

remember that??? either last year or the year before they literally called school off because it was cold. no snow, no ice, just cold lol.

just look at like this, better safe than sorry. and hey for me that means about 30 more minutes of sleep and no yelling at em to get up!

I live in Spartanburg...which also cancelled classes...calling for sustained winds 35-45 with gusts to 55 mph. I don't see that being the case, but if so that would make a long flat school bus very dangerous to drive. I think they are afraid to chance it, but when I was in School...no way they shut down school for that, but that was in the 60's before bike helmets, seat belts and such. We even climbed trees back then.

I guess you're just talking about OUR local area in the upstate of SC, BUT...

Sister is in Tampa and was on Hurricane Duty at her hospital, and I can't get an update yet from her.

Son in Orlando lost power, but is safe. They have some damage, but not sure.

Per TV, 5.8 million without power in FL, and that number will rise. Some will be without power for weeks.

Not much here in the Spartanburg area that I can see. YET.
