Question for Alums out of curiosity

Sep 15, 2017, 12:48 PM

Debating with a friend (who is a coot) about non-alums singing the Alma Mater. The coot sings the Alma-Mater at every game even though they never attended USCjr. I don't at Clemson games because I believe an Alma-Mater is reserved to those who attended the school because that's the very definition of an Alma Mater which I, of course, had to explain to the coot.

Alums, what are your feelings on non-alums singing it? Should they? Does is it tick you off?

Non-Alums, do you sing it?

Some may think this is a petty discussion but I've always held these type of things as sacred and important in knowing your place.

I do not intend this discussion to be about Alum vs non-alum and who is more of a fan. TIA in advance

This is a valid question because I honestly have no idea what their alma mater even sounds like.

Same with a USuC class ring. I've never seen one.

If I have, it wasn't memorable. Best class rings IMO: Clemson, aTm, Naval Academy.

Sep 15, 2017, 2:46 PM [ in reply to Alums are true fans, non-alums are supporters. At best.*** ]

Fans and supporters are literally the same thing.. I consider myself a fan. I've bled orange since I was born in the early 90's, but I can't afford out of state tuition. I guess i'm confused, Is not being an Alum supposed to be viewed as a negative attribute? Everyone's situation is different, not all of us get to be graced with the experience of college let alone Clemson.

To clarify, Everyone is granted an opportunity to achieve higher education. I squandered my chance early by screwing up my GPA. Now that it's almost where it needs to be to get into Clemson, I don't know how in the world I'm going to pay for it. (I'll figure it out, but still $$$)

Re: Question for Alums out of curiosity

Sep 15, 2017, 1:02 PM

I don't see a problem with a non-alum singing the alma mater. I would not do it personally. It would not offend me at all. People get offended too easily these days. Would someone get upset if Dabo sang his alma mater when we played them? Would someone get upset if he sang the Clemson alma mater? I understand he has an honorary but, for many years he did not even though he was employed by Clemson.

I'm okay with it as log as they don't burn our flag, kneel or raise their fist during the playing of our National Anthem, tear down or deface the monuments of American heroes, burn / destroy / loot every time they disagree with anything, or try to re-name every building named after someone in our American history.

If they are male, they had better not go in the bathroom with my wife or daughter.

I'm pretty easy to get along with, but I think we all have limits. :) Peace out.

If they know the words, let them sing! Shoot, I bet some of the non-alums know the words better than the some alums/current students. There's a reason why it's the Clemson family right? That's why they say there's something in these hills (and it's more than a diploma).

If you're an alum, you sing it because you love the school
