What was up with blowing the play dead on those offsides?

Thought it was supposed to be a free play in college if there’s no contact?

Offsides is not “always” blown dead. If the defender makes contact or makes an offensive move pre-snap its blown dead. If it’s judged that the defender would be unabated to the quarterback it’s blown dead. But a neutral zone infraction without contact or movement by the offense can still result in a “free play.” I didn’t see the offsides yesterday closely enough to say if the ref was overzealous or if the offense moved. Ferrell’s offsides may have been viewed as unabated.

Close, but not exactly right.

All off sides are a dead ball foul. Even if the play is allowed to continue, if the ruling is affirmative for a motion infraction, the foul is considered a dead ball foul and there is loss of yardage w/o loss of down (offensive call) and increased yardage with either no loss of down or a first down if yards penalized results in first down (Defensive call.)

Sorry, I had to correct you. I used to officiate at the FCS level and the rules are the sames as FBS.
