After the FSU loss I had a Coot friend say

The only thing that made my Saturday was seeing Clemson get their ### kicked by FL ST.
I reeled off about 10 games where they had been blown out, including the 59-0 beating by FL ST in '88. And then the 39 point loss to Auburn a few years ago. And also said 63-17!
He just looked shocked , had nothing left to say, and changed the subject.

I'm not sure that either Clemson or SC could have beaten Furman on said Saturday. They both played terrible games that day, with a healthy assist from their respective opponents, of course.

Awesome! Yes, my Dad played on the 48 team. His name was Gene Carson. Played left end on offense. Played behind a bigger guy named John Poulos. He was a Spartanburg High School player and played in the Shrine Bowl. Coach Howard honored his scholarship after he got out of the Navy.
Dad passed about 10 years ago after a car accident. I really miss the days going to the Tiger games with him.
What was your Dad's name - and yours?

Bobby Gage and his family lived in my neighborhood

when I was growing up in the 1960s in Greenville. I enjoyed hearing some of his stories. I think he was one of the first players to wear a face mask that was actually a single bar to protect a broken nose.

I was the first player to wear a face mask on my 1950 high school team, also to protect a busted nose. The opposing coach pitched a fit and said it wasn't legal and wanted the ref to not let me use it. After much argument I was allowed to use it. How times have changed.

Like a game that happened 10 years ago worries coot fans today. It was a great game and an awesome memory, but guess what, they've beaten us 4 years in a row.
I reserve talking for after we win the game. Y I love putting down Carolina, but its hard to run when you have no legs, and its hard to talk down to USuC fans when we haven't beat them.
Trust me, there is 4 years of pent up rage and smack that I am ready to unleash, but we have to win first.

Well, SC has obviously been a stronger program for the past few years, so some Tiger fans have a psychological need to make up these stories about their "idiot coot friends" to feel superior to their rival, even if it's just in imagined conversations. Beating your rival on the field would seem to be more satisfying to me, and it needs to happen on November 30!
