A little help?

Need to put down my 16 year old best friend tomorrow. He’s a 15.5 year veteran of Clemson games. Sports his orange proudly. Good boy. Springer Spaniel. Seems like yesterday he was a pup. Can anyone make me feel better?

Sucks man. I've done it three times. My now 7 year old, was 3 at the time decided about a month after we had to put our boxer down that his way of honoring Jaxx was to go pee on the dogs favorite tree to take a leak on. Not saying that's what you should do. I just thought it was funny.

It’s the right thing to do and if he could talk he’d tell you so and thank you.

16 years is a long time and I'm sure a happy life for your pup. I'd imagine you gave him the best years you could.

I can’t think of a thing that is going to make it hurt less; however, with my own Pet about a year ago and a friends a couple of months ago I can tell you how to make it not quite as traumatic. When you go ask the vet to give your pet a mild sedative. This will calm your pet and allow you precious moments to spend with your pet. Mine was a large dog shepherd/husky (princess) and I was able to get down on the floor with her and hold her head in my lap and hold, loved her. They then give them the other shot that instantly stops their heart.

Words can never really heal a broken heart. I'm sorry for the loss you are going to have. Lost my faithful yellow lab last May. We spent 13 plus years together. I just cherish the time we were able to spend together. Good luck.

Lost my Springer 3 years ago, was 13. The only advice is to grieve him and get another one when the time is right. So sorry for you buddy, man it's hard.

The worst thing about having a 4 legged friend is knowing that you will probably have to bury it someday. No words will help when that time comes, relish the times you had together!

When sadly thinking about how yo will miss him, instead be so thankful for all the great times y'all had together. I lost a great hunting companion, myself, a couple of weeks ago. I feel your pain.

OLD DOG
Toward the last in the morning she could not get up, even when I rattled her pan. I helped her into the yard, but she stumbled and fell. I knew it was time.
The last night a mist drifted over the fields. In the morning she would not raise her head - the far, clear mountains we had walked surged back to mind.
We looked a slow bargain: our days together were the ones we had already had. I gave her something the vet had given, and patted her still, a good last friend.

Having been there many times, it is heart wrenching and never without a flood of tears. Just be with him to the very end with a loving touch and calming words. I'm sure you've done everything you could. it's time to let him go now.

You can get a puppy to help with the grief but losing a friend is tough.

its gonna hurt for a while, but, not too far down the road, you will start to smile when something reminds you of him and the good times you had together - and it will happen pretty often. Hang in there

We had a dog we put down years ago.

We had someone come to our home and do it there.. best extra fee I've ever paid. She hated going to the vet, and instead, was put down peacefully with eating a peanut butter spoon in her own home. She had a great day for her the day before, and we were grateful that she was able to enjoy her last day. Its going ro hurt. Sob and let it out. Sorry friend.

I lost my 17 y/o Terrier mix that I've had since I was 10 in December.
Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
Losing your best friend, I considered mine a family member, is never easy. Cherish what time you have left, and for me, I had to mention to my baby how much that I loved her and how good of a girl she was.
I re-read Where The Red Fern Grows...
"I suppose there's a time in practically every young boy's life when he's affected by that wonderful disease of puppy love. I don't mean the kind a boy has for the pretty little girl that lives down the road. I mean the real kind, the kind that has four small feet and a wiggly tail, and sharp little teeth that can gnaw on a boy's finger; the kind a boy can romp and play with, even eat and sleep with."
And a more dramatic...
“I buried Little Ann by the side of Old Dan. I knew that was where she wanted to be. I also buried a part of my life along with my dog.”
It's never easy, and things will never be the same, but enjoy your time left, and remember the Tiger community stands together! We are here for you!

The knowledge that you're doing the right thing for him

doesn't help much, I'm afraid. It's going to hurt - so let it. Someone deemed them "man's best friend" and that someone was right.
I had to put my puppy dog (11 years old) down recently - and I sat in my car and cried like a dang baby behind the vet's office. I hadn't cried since my Mother died several years earlier.
Funny thing - a large fellow, bearded biker-looking guy was standing out there crying like a little girl too. I'm sure it was for the same reason. (He hadn't even gone in yet, I don't think.)
Dang dogs. They're awesome, so we love 'em.
Sorry - I guess I didn't help much...

Nothing hurts quite like that. Sorry to hear it.
A few years back, I had to do the same so I brought him home, dug a hole, and planted a tree in my back yard. I had to do the same for a cat a couple of years later. It only helps some to watch the tree grow.

It was actually a very peaceful experience for our old Lab. Try to focus on the funny stories and good times shared with your pup. Your Tiger family will be thinking about you & praying for your family.

Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then will you do what must be done, For this — the last battle — can't be won. You will be sad I understand, But don't let grief then stay your hand, For on this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years, You wouldn't want me to suffer so. When the time comes, please, let me go. Take me to where to my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me till the end And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree It is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do; We've been so close — we two — these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Praying for you. That's so tough but you know you have to do what is best for him. You'll miss him, of course, but always take solace in all of the wonderful special memories you created together that were all yours. God bless.
