I've been saying all along that 6 is the perfect number. It keeps the high priority on the regular season to earn one of the 2 byes.

Or go to 12:
Top 4 - first round bye
Seeds 5-8 - first round home game
Seeds 9-12 - first round true road game
Second round move to bowl sites or give top 4 seeds home games too

6 would seemingly be great. Too many issues with byes. Over ranked teams getting byes will not sit very well with folks.

Could do 8. 5 conf champs, top ranked non power 5 plus two highest ranked P5 non champions. Then the argument is number of games approaching 16, and several would have one less game if they don't play in a conference title game.

It gets messy quick.

Six is awful. We'd be right back where we started.

Who gets #1 and #2? You'd have to have some sort of selection process. And at that point in the season, against that level of competition, a bye would be enormous.

You simply can't have a vote for a bye for two teams in a tournament that small with competition that good in a sport that rough.

The only way to make it right is a 16 team playoff with every conference champ and five at large. I'm not advocating that, but I liked the sport back when you just had the AP vote for a champ and we all went to normal bowl games. But if you're obsessed with having a real champ, every team in D1 must have an avenue to the championship.

Who is better than Western Michigan? No one has proven it yet.
