36 years ago today Kevin Butler 60 yard FG to beat #2 Clemson

Clemson was on probation in 1984 from more cheating and could not be on TV or go to a bowl, but the Tigers were an OUTSTANDING TEAM and if they went 11-0 they would have won the AP national title.
Clemson was ranked #2 and dominated the first half and lead 20-6.
In the 2nd half the Dawgs made play after play and then the kick.
Had Clemson beaten Georgia that day they ABSOLUTELY WOULD have gone 11-0 and won the AP National Title.
After the loss, the Tigers gave up on the season and basically quit. Danny Ford admitted it years later.
After the game Danny Ford went crazy and Vince Dooley finally realized he was not going to shake his hand.
I was at that game and I vividly remember the UGA fans “escorting” Clemson fans out of the stadium..
Greatest kick in college football history and forever changed a season for Clemson.

So was I!! Till this day, probably the worst defeat I ever saw and felt...awful!!!
I was sitting in the end-zone that Butler kicked towards. One of longest FGs I've ever seen. I'm convinced that kick would have been good from 65 to 70 yards!! ??????

Went on to play for the BEARS. Did well.
David Treadwell went on to play for Denver. Both were great kickers.

I haven't missed a Clemson - UGA game since 1977. Saw the beat down in 1976.
Ready for 2021 in Charlotte as well - LORD willing

You are full of it. Clemson was on ACC probation that year not NCAA probation. I still say Swoffie had a lot to do with it but that is in the past. Kevin Butler was the kicker for the butsniffers and a soccer player was Clemson's kicker Donald Igwebuike. UGA 40 yrs and counting since a NC.

1 of my 2 games going to Athens to see the Tigers play the Dawgs.Felt really good when the halftime score was 20-6 with the Tigers leading but the feeling sure went to absolute chit in the 2nd half

We were sitting in the end zone he was kicking to and remember thinking “no way he can make it from there”. Then watched it in what seemed like slow motion just keep coming ...and ......just shook our heads. Think it would have been good from 70. Never have liked Georgia. Better memory was my freshman year road tripping with 9 best friends to UGA and beating em between the hedges 7-6. Now THAT was a good time. Go Tigers

I was at this game. They still had to kick off to us and we threw a cross field lateral and the runner went to about mid field and was hit out of bounds. The refs said that because time had run out, they could not penalize the mutts. My seat was in line to the clock over the head of the runner and he went out with a second on the Clock. Could have used review back then. Igi could have made it.

You are correct. I had the same vantage point as you. I looked up after the hit out of bounds and saw the clock go blank and then light up 01. Clearly there was time!

Speaking of cheating, ahem, Herschel, ahem - there was time on the clock when he ran out of bounds. 10th grade - I was there. Some 80 yr old dude was flipping me off after the game. Even at 15 yo, I knew that was pathetic.

I was in the last seat in the Clemson section, top row upper deck 50 yard line, it was a rocket. Last play was right below me, the clock had time on it. Dooley sprinted across the field to give the refs a hint.
I asked Danny what he said to Dooley at midfield after the Treadwell field goal in 1986 he said he told him "F&$K you Vince!"

I was on about the 10, with the kick going from my left to right, so I got a good look at how far that kick went past the cross bar, and I believe it would have been good from 70. Just amazing.
On the post game confusion, I believe Ford was arguing that there was time on the clock after Clemson ran the kickoff back to near midfield. Plus there was a penalty on Georgia. So, conceivably, Clemson could have had one play to tie or win. I don't think Ford was snubbing Dooley, just trying to keep from losing.
Clemson's QB was two-sport star Mike Eppley, and I don't know if it was him or the running backs, but it seemed there was a lot of confusion on the option play that day. Eppley pitching it to nobody and Georgia recovering. Seemed that happened more than once.
