3 SEC teams — is it possible

Nov 7, 2019, 8:12 AM

Georgia wins out the SEC. Then you will have 3 teams with one loss (Georgia, LSU, Bama) and assume they all played each other close.
The SEC champ is in for sure which is Georgia at this point.
Final assumption, the coots play us a close game.

What do you think?

I think you would need some serious chaos at this point to get two SEC teams in...but it is possible. If Bama loses Saturday, they are toast.

SEC champ is obviously in. Whether a second SEC team gets in depends on how Clemson, Oklahoma, Baylor, Oregon and Utah finish their seasons.

I am betting that we have just one from SEC. May be wishful thinking.

If no unbeatens and the pool for the Top 4 was all 1-loss

teams, then they would consider it. In that scenario, UGA might be the odd man out because of their bad loss to UofSC, assuming that Clemson's loss wasn't also to SCAR.

Could be a clean sweep.

Could happen but you would need the rest of the world to all take a hit. Clemson lose, Oregon lose again, OU lose again. Make it easy for them.

Clemson would not be out in that scenario if we win out, because with Georgia's only loss to the team we just beat on their home field, would say we are both ACC and SEC champs by SEC logic.

Re: 3 SEC teams — IT WILL HAPPEN!

Nov 7, 2019, 8:24 AM

3 SEC teams will definitely be sitting at home for bowl season. 1 of those teams beat UGA (the SEC champion in your scenario). So, yeah, there will be at least 3 SEC teams that aren't good enough to go to a bowl game; and probably more like 5 or 6. They should have a party.

Do you think Clemson jumps LSU if their game with Bama is close game and if not for a bad referee late call, LSU would have won it?

Of course Clemson jumps the loser of that game! And Clemson will jump the loser of the PSU-OSU game the next week. We'll be 3rd in 2 weeks with a better than 50/50 shot of being 2 or 1 after the conference championship games.

This whole thing is ridiculous. If they'd waited another week or 2 before releasing the CFP rankings, nobody would've said a word about it.

I guess we will find out this weekend and I ll be pulling for LSU because we have better chance of jumping Alabama with one loss. If LSU loses a close one to bama as I stated above, not so sure that we will jump them.

Re: 3 SEC teams — is it possible (Long)

The first ranking by the "august" committee is in the books and, the BIG 10 and SEC bias is in full display. Ohio State (Big 10) is #1; LSU (SEC) is #2; Alabama (SEC) is #3; and Penn State (BIG 10) is #4. Where are … Clemson (ACC) and Oregon (PAC 12)? On the outside looking in! Why? Because they are from the ACC and PAC 12, respectively, and since the "power" in college football rests with the SEC and BIG 10, they don't want anybody else "crashing the party!"

Think about this:

Oregon lost in the last few minutes of its first game of the year to a decent Auburn team,
for its only loss, and yet is actually behind Georgia (SEC) which is 7-1, and its loss
came at home to a bad South Carolina team!

And Clemson, the defending National Champions, winners of 24 straight games and
sitting at 9-0, had the audacity to beat a mediocre North Carolina by a single point in its
third game of the year. In its 8 other games, Clemson has beaten its opponents by
an average of 37 points! As a result of this "poor play" given its strength of schedule,
they are ranked below Alabama … which has also played nobodies! Also, Penn State,
ranked ahead of Clemson at #4 is one dropped pass from Michigan having taken them
to overtime … at home!

There is actually some who believe that a 13-0 ACC Champion Clemson team could actually be left out of the 4-team playoff. Andrea Adelson, with ESPN, has already floated this possibility. I don't believe that the Committee could actually be so brazen as to do this … but you never know!

In this regard, let me outline the Committee's "worst nightmare":

1) Since Ohio State is so great in the committee's eyes, assume it remains undefeated
and stays #1 … and this means that they will have beaten Penn State and
Minnesota, so Penn State and Minnesota are effectively out of consideration for the
CFP;

2) LSU and Alabama play this Saturday, so one will win and be undefeated … and the
other will have one loss. Assume that both will win out, but the winner of the game
this Saturday would win the West Division of the SEC and assuming that Georgia
wins out, the LSU/Alabama winner will play Georgia for the SEC Championship.
GOD forbid, if Georgia wins that game, they will join Ohio State in the CFP … but
LSU and Alabama would all have one loss;.

3) My guess is that Oregon and Utah will win out, with each having one loss, and play
one another in the PAC 12 Championship game, and the winner will be the PAC 12
Champ with a 12-1 record. Let's say it's Oregon;

4) Then, the only BIG 12 team with a prayer of making the CFP would be Oklahoma,
as the BIG 12 Champion at 12-1 … but with a very ugly loss to Kansas;

5) Assume Clemson wins out and is the ACC Champion, at 13-0, and having won 28
games in a row.

Given the above, the rational committee member would think the four CFP teams would be Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon and Clemson because the other conference Champion, Oklahoma, has one ass-ugly loss that none of the four, above, have.

Does that mean the SEC and Big 10 will only have one team in … with both LSU and Alabama left out? Can you imagine that? OR … will PAC 12 Champ, Oregon, or an undefeated ACC Champ, be bumped in favor of LSU or Alabama? If yes, which one is bumped out, and which of the two SEC teams gets in? OR … would the committee ignore Oregon and Clemson in favor of both LSU and Alabama … and the SEC gets 3 teams in!

Can you imagine? Now that would be obvious SEC bias!!!

No way 3 SEC teams get in. If UGA wins the SEC championship game, it is much more likely LSU and Alabama will both be left out of the CFP than all 3 get selected.

Re: 3 SEC teams — is it possible

i guess it's possible, if Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon, Utah, and Oklahoma ALL end up with 2 or more losses AND LSU, Bama, and UGa, end with 1 loss.

Those are long odds my friend.

Given that Bama could have 3 losses and Saban died, and they'd still put them in....yeah, it's possible.
