I suspect they hoped for the SEC rival in most cases or at least made it look that way. Sadly your cancel remark may happen but not for the reason you complain about.

I know the smaller schools use these type game to fund their athletic dept, but obviously the influx of cash isn't going to be equal to what was originally expected.
Any idea on what the payout for these games will be?

Nope. It's USF after W.Michigan canceled on them when MAC canceled. I thought it was mandatory ND must always play Navy.
