1st Post... Georgia Rivalry

Jun 14, 2019, 8:34 AM

When I was at Clemson in the early 80's, Georgia was our most heated rivalry (our top rival). The Friday night midnight pep rallies at the amphitheater were always great. The night before the 1882 game, I remember all the students wrapping their thumbs in toilet paper to simulate the cast Herschel Walker was to wear with his supposed injury. By the way, Herschel did play the next day and Georgia won in a close game. Sucked... just sayin...

I think that also applies to Mike Rozier from Nebraska! They all won the Heisman, none crossed the Tiger goal line!

I remember some fun pep rallies at amphitheater

One comes to mind... can’t recall the game. It was in 70s.

There was to be a live goldfish swallowing contest. They invited anyone wanting to participate up and don’t think they were thinking that many kids would do it

But there were so many they ran out of goldfish. I remember that some way they got “substitutes” for the goldfish pretty quick. (I think someone went to local bait shop and got minnows)

Even then they ran out of “food,”. I recall some fool from out hall on Johnstone getting a nice cockroach on a date as a substitute to the fish. He even made a point out of “crunching” instead of just swallowing. Also makes me ill to this day! Lol

My favorite amphitheater memory

Jun 14, 2019, 9:14 AM

was walking up on stage wearing only tennis shoes to get a number so we could count the streakers.

Good times, good times.

Herschel really did have that injury. I had the same injury

Jun 14, 2019, 2:08 PM

at the same time on my left thumb, or actually the thumb joint where it meets the palm. It was my Jr year of HS. He and I, according to my orthopedic surgeon, had the first silicone casts in the country. It was brand new then and allowed guys to play because it wasn't as hard as plaster. I still covered mine in padding, though. It hurt like the dickens to get hit with a helmet on it.

That UGA rivalry was intense, man. My first memory of it was listening to Jim Phillips call our 7-6 win @ UGA in 1977. That game was a springboard to winning 7 in a row after losing to Maryland in the first game. We eventually tied UNC after those 7 wins, and then Joe Montana and ND came to town.

great first post. Welcome Pig!***
