1969 ACC Champions

Oct 23, 2019, 6:12 PM

So........I’m watching a replay of UofSC vs Florida and they have “1969 ACC Champions” permanently displayed on their stadium. Are...you...kidding...me...
Sad.

They won the ACC again in 1971 but had the conference title taken away for playing ineligible players. Seems like cheating is a big part of their history to.

No. Coots won the ACC in 1965 but had the title stripped due to using an ineligible player. They also screwed co-champion Duke by their cheating ( giving them one less win ) thereby awarding us and NC State the co-championship. 1970 was their last year in the ACC. In 1971 they became an independent until 1992.

BTW, we were ACC Champions 6 times before the Coots did it. \

They have to display it; it's their ONLY Conference Championship but hey they'e only been playing for 125 years.

Let's talk conference championships.

"Clemson won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1900 and 1902 (tied 1903 and 1906) along with the Southern Conference title in 1940 and 1948. Their 18 ACC titles (16 outright, 2 tied) is the most ACC football championships."

The coots could use it as a recruiting pitch:
"If you come here and win a conference championship, we will prominently display the year for all to see. If you go to Clemson, the year just gets mixed in with all those other championship teams".

I know 2 members of that team and if you think about it, it was quite an accomplishment!

South Carolina is TIED for second-to-last for championships of a program.

Worse, while there were independent for a very short time, only long-standing independents have fewer (ie Army and Notre Dame) or if your D1 program is younger than about 1997. ODU, Charlotte, Georgia State, South Florida, etc.

No team than has begun a program since 1969 or has at least a decade in a major conference has FEWER trophies than the coots.

Heck, Rutgers which was Division III until the 1960s and then went indy until joining the Big East has the same number of trophies. Actually they have more as only one of their trophies is a D1 championship, the others are DIII so they break the tie.

Pretty sure the Ole Ball Sac had that put up. He said,

"We ain't won much around here, let's celebrate the times we DID win." Or something like that.
