they were a BIG part of the atmosphere that I grew up experiencing and why I love the team. But, like most of the city itself, most of what I grew up in is gone now so I'll learn to live with this change too when I visit for games or to visit family.

Going back to the nearly ballon free days of the early 80s

We broke the record for most balloons launched at one game and had them maybe 2 other times in the 5 years I was there and the games were still pretty dang exciting.
I personally filled a couple of hundred of those record breaking balloons. Was at the stadium at 7 am hangover and all. Guy to girl ratio at the filling party was excellent- went out with my “tank partner” a few times. Fun stuff being new and different made it special. Doing it for every game has kind of knocked the shine off of it.

It's not what it used to be anyway. They sued to give them out to everyone in the stands and release hundreds more in bulk. The sky used to be darkened by balloons. Early man would have worshipped the people who made the sun disappear.
Lately it's been pretty anemic. Hardly worth killing turtles.

Run over by cars transporting 80,000 people to and from the games, than by the balloons.

Line the bottom of the hill (field side) with maybe 100 large, vinyl re-usable helium-filled balloons; tether them at various heights up to 100 feet; let them go up when the cannon booms … and then bring them back down and deflate. I'm sure they could find 50-100 volunteers to do this quickly. AND/OR ... get about 20 24-foot "air dancers" made to look like tigers, and turn the fans on super-high speed when the cannon goes off. Surely they can come up with something like this to replace the balloons … albethey less exciting options. Think, people think!

in all honesty, it had gotten really lame in recent years

balloons had been reduced to such an insignificant amount, they seem to never release then on time, or one side would do it before the other......something to wack it up.
It had seen its best days and was a shell of the tradition it used to be. I'm not that tore up about it.
But I must say this was one of the coolest spectacles I ever witnessed.....
