There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

A sad day for me. I knew Bill Foster from the time I started school. Hemingway had only one school building then, and the high school students had classes upstairs, and the elementary kids were downstairs. I think he was a junior when I was in the first grade, but everybody knew everybody. He played football, basketball, and baseball.

Few people ever knew his real nickname. The teachers called him William, but he was called "Satch" by all of his friends. He was a college coach when I first heard him called Bill.

He returned to Hemingway for a summer job while he was in college and established Hemingway's Little League Baseball Program. That might have been his first coaching job, and he was my first Little League coach. It was a pleasure playing under him, and he taught me a lot.

I had an emergency appendectomy during the season, but he chose me for his all star team although he knew my season was over. That was a nice thing for him to do, and I'll never forget it.

I saw him at an IPTAY meeting just after he came to Clemson, and we talked about the fond memories from those good old times.

May he rest in peace.

RIP Great Uncle Bill. I didn't get to see him as the coach of Clemson growing up by my mother did. I did watch him as a kid growing up when he coached at Virginia Tech and he used to send me all the basketball ball shoes. Most importantly he was a great man and I was greatful for him to be part of my family. Awesome coach and an awesome man. You will be missed Uncle Bill. RIP we love you and miss you down here on the beach.
