As many of y'all may have noticed whether because you genuinely missed me or because of the sudden lack of [1]'s everywhere, but I've been absent from the Tigernets.
I was making our annual trip to the UP of Michigan. Went up earlier than normal this year because we were also burying wifekrzy's grandfather. Grandfather passed away over Christmas, but you have to wait this long for the ground to thaw to bury someone up in the UP.
Timeline...
Drove the 18 hour drive leaving Saturday (24th..happy belated birthday Jimbeam, you old fart) around 3ish. I drove the first leg until about 3 in the morning, we were somewhere in Michigan on I-75. Wifekrzy took over for about 3 hours of driving. I then woke up enough to continue the drive.
This picture was after the first 18 hour drive back, the bugs were horribad, and worse coming home, imagine about 4 times the amount of bugs on this was the end of the trip, forgot to take a picture before I started scrubbing with a window washing device from a gas station
If y'all remember, there is an old cabin on the lake that wifekrzy's grandfather & great-grandfather built from scratch. This old cabin is where wifekrzy's family always did their summer trips, it has no running water, no power except for a generator that they run for a couple hours at night only if necessary, and is very nice. The new cabin we're building is on a 40-acre plot next to the old cabin, still on the lake, you can see the old cabin's dock from the new cabin's point.

Drove all the way back to Marquette. So for the rest of Sunday and for first half of Monday, we stayed in Marquette and hung out with family. Cole had to stay with wifekrzy's brother for the night. Wifekrzy's brother & his g/f have an 18 month old, so both aunts got to hang out with their niece. It was a good time. Monday night we drove out to the cabin and had a cookout with most of the family that was in town for the burial. Had a solid night with family...then drove back to Marquette. This time we left Cole at the cabin with FIL & g/f, apparently he did great.
Tuesday was the burial, the girls were happy we were in Marquette and had a running shower and power for them to get ready. The ceremony was very good minus the gnats, which were EVERYFUCKINGWHERE. Grandfather was Lt. Col USMC (ret) and the local group of Veterans were there for the flag, gun salute, & taps, which was very emotional.

After the burial, we all had a luncheon with all the family. Was a long day, FIL drove g/f and SIL to the airport and they flew home. Wifekrzy and I drove back to the cabin and hung out with Cole for the afternoon.
FINALLY! We get to stay out at camp and work on the new cabin. We have three days to crank out as much work as possible. FIL didn't get very far with the electrical after I had left it last year, he only installed a couple switches and put in a few exterior light fixtures and that was it. So I had three days to finish all the wiring devices, and wire up the knee wall whenever it got install (you'll see a picture, on the loft).
So we worked three long days. By we, I mean me and FIL, wifekrzy wasn't too much help on the construction side beyond a go-getter. Love her to death, but I need to teach her how to drill a screw (*snicker*). She was helpful in constructing the knee wall so I didn't have to help FIL on that and could continue wiring.
Wednesday: 13 hour day
Thursday: 12 hour day
Friday: 15 hour day
Saturday morning had a slow morning, slept in, cooked up eggs, bacon, and pancakes, then got on the road around 11:00. Drove through the night again and made it home Sunday around 7am.

He was USN, worked on a bunch of the code-breaker equipment in Dayton during WW2 (This stuff and My grandpap. The local VFW was out in dress uniforms, played Taps and fired the salute. I agree, it was probably the most emotional I've ever been at a funeral.
Very nice cabin, ice on the lake? Fo-realz? And I can now say I've seen your wife in the bathroom (pervlulz). And at least those weren't lovebugs.

But we will go for 2 weeks whenever we go.
FIL is a professor, he will go multiple times during the summer, and during other seasons, like winter to hunt.
BIL lives in Marquette, will go for several weekend trips.
It'll get a lot of use.

can go through ceiling or floor joists to get to the next device. In the log cabin, you cannot traverse the exterior logs, the loft flooring is tongue n' groove pine so there is no space to conceal wires, etc.
Whenever you had to put in a wire inside the logs (like the receptacles on the second course of logs), we drilled a 3/4" hole down whenever we were putting in the logs two years ago, then chiseled out a hole for the single gang handy box. To snake multiple wires through that would be incredibly difficult (as getting one was incredibly frustrating for a few of them), so you need to send a single wire out there for the receptacle.
Made it easier and used less wire to go to a central location and bring wire there.
Yes, devices are mounted in their own junction box.
That make sense?

The solar panel is constantly charging the batteries. If the battery level gets too low, it will kick on the generator and the generator will charge the batteries until fully charged.
During the day, the batteries will handle all the peak loads being used and the solar will keep charging it to cover the house loads. Generator might kick on late at night if people are still using too many plug loads (all lights will be LED) or using too much water (the well pump is the largest electrical load of the house).

You would have to cut down immensely on the hot water heater and dryer to save propane for the generator. Also cut down on all electrical to allow solar to handle most of the load and save propane used by generator.
Propane is the limited resource.
The next would probably be the life of the batteries, but those are usually more than 10 years.
The issue is the harsh winters in South Canada make it hard for grow your own food.
And yes, I thought about zombie apocalypse and that would be where we would try to get to...or die trying to get there. Either that or Caribbean.

You don't how often I ask that question and get weird looks. Just the other day I was visiting the Biltmore house and asked our guide that same question and I was rebuked. Rebuked!

do you really NEED a hot water heater in that scenario? Couldn't you just heat water over an open flame for cooking or fill the bathtub with cool water, but then use a large pot of boiling water (again- from over a fire) to warm the tub?
And lights could be replaced by candles, if you really needed any at all... And heat would be from a wood fire stove- which would also give you all the light you REALLY needed at night- the sun provides all you need during the day. (you'd actually probably be better off just staying in the OLD cabin in this scenario).
As for food- I'm sure there's plenty of meat roaming around in those woods, not to mention fish. For vegetables- two words: green house. Of course, you could always learn to can/salt/etc. and save back the bounty you would harvest in the summer in the storehouse for the winter.

everything.
But I believe the log kit was about $30k which included them designing and drafting it, then milling the logs, and two days of a guy out there showing you how to put it together.
I know FIL paid someone to put the foundation and pillars in (the crawl space).
I think he paid $40k for lumber including the sub floor, decking, and other misc wood.
I don't know how much he paid for the trusses.
When we were installing plumbing and electrical we made many trips to Marquette (Lowes & Menards <- Usually Menards because they were open until 10pm, lol) racking up $1k bills at times.
He paid someone that installed the pole barn, don't know how much.
I can ask him at some point, but I think all in all, less than $150k.
