Question on our basketball stat sheet

Jan 17, 2019, 8:48 AM

There is a column at the far right with no explanation. Just +/- as its header. Does anyone know what this measures or means? Thanks

I think it measures a player when he is on the court as far as the team did on points scored or not scored while he is playing. ??¿??

I don’t know the formal way to explain it.

But to me, it basically means how well the players do when they are on the court and how much they contribute. Higher, positive numbers are good and negative numbers are bad.

court. It's supposed to measure a players overall impact on the game, but it's been proven to be pretty unreliable.

Here's a simple example of how it works

Team A brings a player off the bench twice during a game for 5 minutes each time. The first 5 minutes he's on the court his team outscores the other team by 6. The second 5 minutes he's on the court his team gets outscored by 4. His +/- for the game is +2 in 10 minutes of action.

This starts out too much like an algebra problem!
