Question for the football knowledgeable of you. Compare Deon Cain to

Jun 24, 2017, 1:29 PM

Mike Williams and Sammy Watkins for me. Is it a fair comparison? I think numbers may be similar. He'll be number 1, lots of receptions, tds, yes, but is he the same body type/type of receiver? He seems to maybe get open more based off speed than body size to me as compared to Mike Williams but I'm honestly not sure. Thanks.

I don't know more than anyone else, but so far..

Cain has been more of a deep threat who is a little shifty too. Mike Williams just seems more like a big possession WR who will be great for moving the chains and in he endzone. Sam Watkins was somewhat of hybrid. Cain seems way more of a deep threat. He would be perfect for the Raiders or the Steelers. This year maybe we will see more of what Cain can do though. Anyway, that's how I see it at this stage.

He get's behind defenders well and was really an impact player last year. Deep threat, back shoulder. I think with Cain's experience, the way he's come back and matured he should have another great year as a veteran receiver.

He had a huge reception two years ago against the Semiholes and again in the Natty to get things going. Looks like an excellent play maker in the clutch.

Perfect description. I'd say Cain may be the most athletic of the bunch. Sammy is probably the fastest. Williams may be the least athletic - but he'd be my top choice of the three if I were building a WR corps in the League.

He's closer to Watkins - who was about the same height and weight - than Williams in skillset but right now he's a linear speed guy, period. The rest of his game is still a work in progress. He's converting from a high school QB and you can still see areas of major improvement needed in most of Bryant's game - his route-running, use of hands, body control, use of his body to separate from the defender, footwork, ability to set up a defender with body fakes, etc....

There's no doubt Cain's progressed immensely but if he wants to be a 1st-round pick like those guys were he's got to put some polish on his game and show more consistency and a more complete skillset...and he's got to cut down on his drops. He still drops way too many - not because of bad hands but seemingly because of too-frequent bad concentration, which again is inexperience showing. What all that means is you have to play him at the 9 - the boundary - instead of the 2 where we played Watkins because Watkins was top-drawer at all the skills and you wanted the ball in his hands as much as possible because he was so money. I also think Watkins probably had better 0-60 acceleration (though Cain does have some jets himself) and was a little stouter in the lower body and was harder for a DB to bring down, which again also helped him at the 2, where he was catching so many short screens just to get him touches, and then Sammy would go get his YAC.

Short version is Cain's super-talented but still raw and it shows. I could see them playing him some at the 5-slot (where Hunter Renfrow plays) this year just to catch some mismatches on LB's or nickel corners but mostly Cain's a pure deep-ball specialist at the moment.

Sorry, meant "Cain", not "Bryant". Huh. Way to hit the Wayback Machine, quoz. Same stuff was true about Martavis Bryant too, though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think you were right with Bryant. That is who he is the most

Jun 24, 2017, 2:31 PM

like at the moment. He has the size and speed to be Williams or Watson maybe, but needs to develop the "win the ball" skills in close quarters and better inside route running skills. Not sure he will ever have the "catch to full speed" ability of Watkins that made him special.

Nice analysis. Would love to see him be able to get position more.***

it is going to be a while before anyone can be compared to Mike Williams. I would say Sammy, but cain is not quite that far along.

Our receivers may have different numbers, and it's mainly bc the type of receiver they are and the receiver slot they play out of. Take Cain, he isn't an out of the back field type receiver, when Sammy and and Ray Ray are!!!

I see more of Sammy Watkins than Mike Williams when it comes to Deon Cain. Honestly, he's almost exactly like 50% Sammy and 50% Nuk

Re: Question for the football knowledgeable of you. Compare Deon Cain to

The most critical thing I can say if I take my orange glasses off is of the four (Cain, Sammy, Nuk, Williams) is I trust Cain the least to just catch the ball. They all have skills to get open, but I've wanted to choke Cain the most just from the drops alone. Just my 2 cents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It really is time for Cain and Ray Ray to go next level and

Produce at level their recruiting rankings suggested. I think they can and will have special years. If not There are others ready to step up.

Re: Question for the football knowledgeable of you. Compare Deon Cain to

I would describe the comparison as follows:

To Sammy Watkins - Sammy was explosive from the get-go and ran extremely good routes. He could shake and bake anybody at any location along his route, before or after catching the ball. Cain probably has Sammy's top speed, but not his initial route shake or later run shake.

To Mike Williams - Mike has something that most WRs can't duplicate..... he's not blazing fast and not particularly shifty with stutter steps and cuts.... but he has a long stride and cuts in front of a defender which creates separation, then can out-jump the defender to catch the ball. His vertical jump, vision, timing and hand/eye coordination are terrific, as is his ability to twist his body into position off of his jump - attributes that probably came from his basketball days. Mike is not the trickiest receiver on routes like Sammy, but he has a talent that I don't think we have in any of the present WRs. He also seems to have an ability to use the defender as a tree and climbs up the defender on his jump, which holds the defender down and further boosts Mike's elevation.

Cain is a speed receiver. He needs to work on his routes - particularly the slants and slant/go, which are very effective when a DB is laying off respecting a WR's speed. Obviously, he needs to also work on his hands and look the ball into a catch. He's probably thinking about busting a long one, which may be the cause of his too-frequent drops.

We probably should run him out of the backfield or slot on motion/wheel routes, unless Feaster and/or Etienne can do it.

Overall, I'm not concerned about our overall D or O-line, but I am concerned about QB, WR and TE positions and to a lesser extent RB. We will need to have some guys step up to have another chance at a championship. It can be done, but it's a tall order.

Well put this is what I have noticed but couldn't have said it that well.***

Dabo said when deon signed he was a blend of deandre and Watkins

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Imo, no one campares to Sammy

Jun 24, 2017, 8:16 PM

Ive never seen a WR just ###### the ball out of the air so effortlessly added to the fact that his acceleration after the catch was just amazing to watch. I dont think we'll ever see another Sammy Watkins at Clemson but if anyone would come close to him i would say it could be our incoming freshman Tee Higgins. Lots of similarities when you watch Higgins film but still doesnt have the speed/acceleration after the catch that Sammy had. If i were to compare Cain to anyone it would be a Martavius Bryant/nuk Hopkins combination

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Watkins and Williams had better hands and more aggressive 'grabbing' the ball***

Yes I agree regarding them going up and getting the ball.

Jun 24, 2017, 8:39 PM

Does Cain have the body for that? I'm sure he has the athletic ability. If he balls out this year I'm going to be so excited for h. Would love to see ray ray take that next step too

He's a stong fella. I have to remember he played QB in HS.

I expect to see him ball out this year including some physical abuse to DBs

Re: Question for the football knowledgeable of you. Compare Deon Cain to

Jun 24, 2017, 9:24 PM

What separates Cain and more so Ray Ray from great Clemson receivers is intensity, Every catch every play is precious. It is not about being cool, making a catch look easy, or matter of fact. It is catching the ball making a positive play and helping your team. Both have made progress in blocking and running their routes when not primary receivers. Cain is further along than Ray Ray. I believe Cain will probably make it and Ray Ray has a good chance but it is still to be done. Not there yet.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He is nowhere near to Watkins yet. How many balls do you

Jun 24, 2017, 10:14 PM

remember Watkins just dropping. Not very many. As good a set of hands as any receiver I have seen. But, Cain has potential to really improve and get more consistent this year.
