Question for the Jounge Libs/dems/socialsits, etc....
Oct 2, 2020, 9:44 AM
|
|
Chuckie Shoomer said yesterday that "Everything is on the table" regarding what the left would do if they took the House, Senate and WH, including:
Question - Do you support:
1. Stacking the court 2. Ending the filibuster 3. Adding PR, DC and maybe Guam as states
If so, please explain why you do.
TIA

yes, prevents the court from becoming hyper partisan and any one administration from loading up the court with idealogues. yes, neither party is likely to have a supermajority, nothing will get done No, I see no purpose in this.

Since P&R Trumpie fools think I'm a radical socialist Dem for dare questioning Dear Leader:
1. No. I don't see how this is good for anyone in the long run. But I can understand why they would try it with the dirty Pub tactics over the last four years. Still, let's let cooler heads prevail and not try to play vengeance politics. If they court is expanded, it needs to be a bipartisan measure with valid reasons.
2. Hell no. The filibuster has a purpose, and trying to eliminate it once in power is a short-sighted move.
3. DC, yes. They're American citizens on the mainland without representation. I would lean yes to PR because I feel like they've put in their time. I'm against Guam only for the silly reason that they're so #### far away.

If Trump loses, the dems stack the Supreme Court, end the filibuster, and add DC and PR as states (PR is adamant they do NOT want to be a state).....
Who will organize the Article V convention, where will it occur, and what Amendments will be on the table?
tia.....
I'd toss in my support for congressional term limits on the Schumer's/Graham's of the world, and a balanced budget amendment obviously phased in over a decade or more at this point.
Honestly, Article V is our only way out of this mess, and it was put in the Constitution for just this reason. It couldn't prevent the Civil War, but it can now prevent our current problem(s). The support of 35 states already exists for my two proposals, and has for some time really.

Seriously # 1 & # 2 are legitimate considerations given McConnell's history. # 3 - maybe PR, no DC and don’t know enough about Guam.
Constitutionally, none of issues are off the table.

I support anything and everything to get rid of Trump. By far the worst president in US history. It's a complete debacle with at the helm. Repubs need to think harder of what they consider a leader.

I don't know about stacking the courts, but I think it would be good to re-evaluate the lifetime judgeship. Perhaps there is a way to create terms so that a POTUS replaces 1 judge per executive term regardless of who holds the Senate.
Also, agree that something should be done about DC. There are 750k people in DC. I don't think that necessarily means making DC a state. Perhaps just further narrowing the federal boundaries of DC so that the majority of the city can reside in Maryland or Virginia. I think polling of PR residents typically shows they don't want to be a state.

1. I support doing something about the SCOTUS. I don't know if I prefer ending lifetime terms, adding, or removing judges, but I don't want a partisan court.
2. I really don't care about the filibuster, but if forced to choose a side I'll go with ending it.
3. If Puerto Rico wants to be a State, yes. I'd prefer DC be gobbled up by VA and MD, but I prefer statehood over their residents not having representatives.

I know the left wing will try anything to stay in power. They don't like this country and want it to be a Marxist government. I agree that DC should be split between Maryland and Va.

Crush,
I feel sure that you would say that I am on the left and I love my country and have no predilection towards Marxism.
As to doing anything to keep power, it is the Repugs that are trying to limit access to voting, and gerrymandering to keep power.

Crush,
That is elementary school reasoning. I would argue that surely there are some Repugs that are TOO reactionary for you, but that may not be true.
Let me assure you that the vast majority of Dems are NOT Marxist and occupy more centrists positions than AOC on any number of issues. You do not do anyone any favors by straining to lump us all into one (extreme) position (other than keeping you from having to rationally engage with our concerns)

The difference in 2016 is Dem was in the White house and the senate was controlled by the Rep.

Expanding the numbers justices is not "stacking the court"
Oct 2, 2020, 11:18 AM
|

and is a completely dishonest assertion.
1. Yes. Expanding the courts would actually accomplish the opposite of what you called it.
2. Yes. Senators from small states have too much power.
3. Yes. Taxation without representation is unAmerican.

Wilbur,
1. Stacking the court is a bit loaded - I would support somehow replacing Barrett with a more liberal Justice. But then I would take it one step further.
I would add one more Justice for a total of ten. This would force the justices to reach beyond their ideologies to find reasonable middle ground with the other justices. If they could not do this, votes would ened in a tie and the lower court ruling would stand.
BTW, the Dems should make the same concerted effort to fill ALL of the lower court vacancies just like the Repubs did. They may even want to add some federal judgeships to deal with backlogs and overflow.
2. I am OK with the filibuster, but the Senators that have problem with legislation should actually have to filibuster (endless debate). Any Senator that wants to stop popular legislation should have to get on the floor (and TV) and explain why.
3.Something should be done to give the DC folks representation, but I am not sure what would be legal and work. PR has rejected statehood a number of times, but it is their decision. I would welcome them if their people really wanted in.
