Question: How in the world did VT get a coach like Buzz Williams?

He was highly respected at Marquette. No way I'll accept that VT was and is a better basketball job than Clemson.

they just happened to have an opening when Williams became available.
And ... I'll bet he isn't coaching Va Tech 5 years from now.
Clemson and Va Tech are not "destination" basketball jobs. They are stepping stones.

I ran into some Marquette fans in G'ville this weekend

and asked them the exact same thing.
In their opinion his program wasn't being run in a "clean" manner and he was told to move on.
I have no idea if that's at all credible of if it was just sour grapes but it's something I'd not heard mentioned about him before.

The part about Willims wanting out of Marquette is true and Va Tech taking advantage is true
BW never did anything wrong at Marquette. That is just sour grapes.
Buzz Williams left Marquette for Va Tech because Larry Williams who was the athletic director at Marquette is one of the biggest Prickssss ever to live. Buzz hated Larry Williams and let it be well known. They had to be separated on occasion, and Buzz once locked the doors to a team practice using his own padlock to keep Larry out. It was that bad.
Also, Williams was concerned on how Marquette and the Big East would figure into the Power 5 equation for basketball.
Buzz Williams left Marquette simply because he hated the athletic department, the athletic director and wanted out. Va Tech did their homework, knew he was unhappy and went out and got him
And Buzz Williams wanted out so bad he took a $500K pay cut to go to Va Tech.

We should give Greg Buckner a incentive laden contract to coach at Clemson and take care of him very well as he builds the program, if he doesn't do well then it's a great experience for both parties without a big buyout.
We might just end up with a great coach who loves Clemson the way Clemson loves him!!

While retaining Bud Foster. Making good moves. They parted ways with Seth Greenberg who was much more successful than Brownwell, then their old AD hired one of our assistants who was fired after two seasons. A new AD came in and made nothing but home run hires so far. Their baseball which has never been relavant is on the rise as well.
