It was hard to tell from my seats but it looked as if Spiers had a very bad game. Is that the way it looked on TV?

Even the punting team barely blocked anyone and he was kicking from his own endzone or close to it frequently. Decent punts for the most part.

He doesn't worry about field position, he's out there to kick the ball as far as he can. If he's in the shadow of his own goal post, if he's on the 15 yard line, whatever, he needed to do his job and he didn't.

You must not understand football, if punters kicked it as far as they could there would be a lot more return TD's.
Ever heard the classic phrase "outkick your coverage?" Well, that's where it comes from.
Also, it does matter where you are, to kick it further you have to have more momentum which means more steps. The further pinned you are the less steps you have to take and it becomes a get the ball off your foot type of plan.

I think he did everything that we could have expected of him. When you start and end every drive on your own 15 yard line, its pretty difficult to flip the field.

Spiers didn't punt very good but his average for the game was almost 4 yards better than the Bama kicker but we had no returns on the Bama punter and they had 30 total yards so it ended up being about the same net yardage wise. Unfortunately, it was all about field position the entire game.

he had a terrible game. He did not flip the field at all, which when you have 80-90 yards of field you need to be kicking as hard and as far as you can. He was averaging under 40 yards, barely getting it past midfield.
