The cop being chased upstairs certainly looked like he was peacefully escorting the crowd. I was honestly expecting a trap when those cops opened the flood gates. I thought a pincer move was on the horizon.

that the whole gallows thing was no less symbolic than this for almost all the Capitol lawbreakers. Do you believe that all these people would have sliced Trump/Republican's head's off? I remember the right being pretty outraged by these people and thinking that many/most should be locked up, but can't recall any suggestions that they all be shot on sight.

Are most of the people in their murderous and bent on hostages/executions? No. Not in any mob, IMO. That's simple human nature; most people would never be capable of such atrocity.
But a mob is stupid. A mob goes along with the mob because they think in numbers, they can get away with more things. They're high on the adrenaline rush while surrounded by like-minded people. Mobs consist of Elizabeth, who seemed incredulous that officers had the audacity to mace her. She wasn't ready to kill anyone.
But nestled within any mob are the people willing to go the distance. They cover their faces and bring zip ties. They immediately seek out Congressional offices for specific people.
Had they found their targets, and had authorities not stopped them, they certainly would have carried out their plans. And a cowardly mob, simply emboldened by numbers, would stand by and cheer them on. Or some would remain quiet because, well, who is going to step forward from the mob and try to stop it?
It's not outrageous. It's happened throughout history.

Where some of the comments seem to insinuate they were just all a merry band of misfits. Ignoring that even one of them had sinister intentions cheapens the severity of issue.
But yes, I agree, a mass firing upon the crowd wasn't the answer, IMO.
However, they #### well should have dropped the ones completely decked out and carrying zip ties. The one dude with his face covered and the Punisher logo? End him.

Someone has, however, argued that ALL of them wanted that.
I'm ok with dropping Punisher guy, provided he was given the opportunity to peacefully surrender first and hadn't brandished a weapon towards a cop. I'm not sure zip ties qualify as an imminent threat to an officer's life.

Right here in this thread, and in plenty of other places, we see some on the left saying "These people are too extreme for America!!!" (and they're right) and then following up with something just as extreme as "shoot them all on sight!!!". We had Carlsbad the other day saying with a straight face that all Trump supporters should be killed immediately.
It's one big extremist pendulum and many on here who are feeling really good about themselves are playing right into it.

O,
You know I don't disagree, but I think we should not be playing down what happened either. A number of very malleable circumstances were the only thing that kept this incident from reaching the critical mass that Cat is describing. It could have easily gone just like that.

It could have gone just like that, however the Capital Police and Secret Service did their jobs and got all members of Congress out of harms way. Luckily, most of the protestors just wanted inside and to show that they want to be a part of the process and are mad that they have been disenfranchised for so long.
This could have gone all wrong, but again, when Capital Police and Secret Service are called to duty, they do their best to keep everyone safe. Although seriously outmanned, they did do a great job in keeping the ruling class safe.

I caught a lot of flak for suggesting it would be better for the country if Trump had died of Covid. That’s starting to look like a more and more defensible position.
If people take up arms against the US, they should be expecting the US to take up arms against them. For those with selfie sticks in the rotunda, we have a legal system for that.
The political leanings of the fallen police officer have no bearing on the tragedy of his death. Similarly the Trump supporter who was shot in the neck while trying to enter a restricted area of the capital is also tragic, but the blame for death lies more with Trump and his minions than with the officer who pulled the trigger.

I think we can ascertain that several of them were just morons looking to make a show, illegal as it was.
The ones coming in decked out in riot/militia gear and carrying zip ties? Yes. Should have dropped them with extreme prejudice.
