That may be just traditional, and now they use something commercial for that purpose.

No, it's still last year's palm fronds

Because the palm fronds are blessed as part of the Palm Sunday Mass, the proper disposal in the tradition of the Catholic Church is to burn them. My parish's final call to return last years palm fronds to the church for burning was last weekend.
The ashes of the burned palms are mixed with the Baptismal chism (Link for the lazy) to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday.

Why do you need a calendar for anything?
Feb 9, 2016, 1:24 PM
[ in reply to I don't get Advent and why we need a calendar for it.*** ] |

We have set times and dates for certain things because we need to order our time. But I think the specific reason for the order of the liturgical calendar is to be reminded that truth unfolds in time- that since our lives are structured by time, we need to ritually set aside certain seasons to observe certain things rather than just expecting us to understand everything all at once, abstractly. So, I guess, the reason for Advent is at least partly educational.

to restructure the present-day Gregorian calendar, since it is structured around the life of Jesus Christ (you know, with all the BC and AD stuff).
Because people so much like to be offended and oppressed these days.
