Have any of you gone so far as to insulate a metal building?

My 20'x25' building just gets too hot for too much of the year. It has hampered my budding woodworking. I figure there must be some way to insulate the place Then put something like this in it. All the videos I watched on YouTube had lots of conflict in the comments.

I didn't ask what the #### he was talking about, I asked for further details about why this is better.

Insulation just slows the rate of heat entering the room...

If you want to 'feel' more comfortable, get a Bigass Fan, or any HVLS fan. It will induce a draft across your skin, therefore feeling much cooler.
https://www.bigassfans.com/
Big ### fans are the starter of all this.
There are many knock offs that are cheaper. Just look for an HVLS fan for your shop size.

I wouldn't mind solar panels up there, but I don't want to pay for those and am not sure it could even support them.

I have seen a couple with some kind of sprayed-on insulation

one was cool and comfortable with a window AC. I really don't know any details, but it seems like it might be relatively inexpensive.

Aug 14, 2020, 11:45 AM

yeah, def don't spray.
you could fit some rigid insulation in there, but you'll have a lot of probably unusable (well, less usable, anyway) waste due to that span...4x8 boards cut down to 4x5-ish
i think a faced batt insulation would be more trouble than it's worth, trying to get that to stay in place
roof mounted exhaust fan(s) could be the deal, doe

using some spray glue to keep the batts. However they didn't use any sort of vapor barrier then showed how stubborn they are when people told them it is going to mold in no time.

u could do the same w/ the rigid insulation
Aug 14, 2020, 11:54 AM

and it's closed cell polystyrene so it shouldn't support mold growth....wouldn't worry so much about a vapor barrier in this case

I'd put solid styrofoam/rigid panels on the ceiling/roof, and get some fans.
Nahghana be cheap though.

Build a new, larger building around it.

Fill the space between buildings with copper tubing. Like jam it through. Pump cold water through that tubing.

You have to have openings to allow air flow.

You have to have openings to allow air to move. Try one on each side of the building. For example, if your building has four walls, you should have four openings - one on each wall. Don't count the ceiling though.

and open the doors and windows so it pulls air through the building.

Either build a new one under ground, or mound up dirt over the current one. I don't care. Either one should work great!

How much sunlight does the building get? In the south during summer, you're going to run the risk of insulation hurting as much as it helps. It looks like you've got some openings in the building, so I agree that fans/air circulation are the way to go.
I'd also suggest some sort of vent in the roof to allow hot air to escape. That would still be cheaper than insulation.
Depending on your yard situation, trees or some other sort of shade on the southern and western sides of the building could be a big help.

It pretty well bakes all day.

Only in the worst of winter does it really get cold in there. I figured the AC portion would help with any heat that got trapped.

Are you saying you have AC in the shed? If you do, insulation should help the AC do its job. If not, I think shade and airflow are better options.

6" w/ white vinyl face.

I've only done that on large buildings. If the roof ever leaks shoot the vinyl face with a BB gun to let the water out and it cures the sag.

If the sun is hitting the roof directly, no amount of insulation is going to help.
If the roof is also metal, they make a really expensive surface paint which is supposed to block most of the heat penetration.
One brand is Sunshield and it's $55 a gallon or so.
Coverage is 100 sq ft/gal.
