Wow. Jesse Jackson is here to save the day. As a resident of Greenville, he's lived 45 minutes away from Clemson all this time and this is just now bothering him today, right before Martin Luther King day? Does he really expect to wash all of Southern history away (good and bad) for the self proclaimed betterment of his race and like minded followers? Of course not. This is another chapter of his opportunistic, self indulgent, race baiting. What will changing the name of a building accomplish? What's next, change the name of the University? Remove Thomas Green from the sunset shadow of Tillman Hall?
If Jesse wants to wipe our culture free of any names that are linked to white supremacy or mistreatment of blacks from over a century ago, he better be ready to change more than a building's name. He better get busy changing names of streets, towns, counties, and wait for it.... even his own name! After all, he shares a last name with General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, who's name surely offends many after leading thousands of confederates against Northern aggression before being killed by friendly fire after a bad decision of getting too far forward of his own men one night. Better change the name of that fort in Columbia while he's at it. Jesse may want to change his first name too as it reminds some of a TV character who's nephews drove a car named after the most decorated Confederate and *gasp* even had a Confederate flag on the roof. What will that accomplish? Nothing....about as much as changing the name of Tillman Hall.
Ironically, Ben Tillman has done more for the people that Jesse pretends to protect just by helping start Clemson (even though that wasn't his intentions). I'm sure Ben was rolling over in his grave when Harvey Gantt became the first black student at Clemson in 1963 paving the way for many more just like him since then. The fact that Jessie even references Mr. Gantt is laughable. Mr. Gantt, a Clemson man, has accomplished more and contributed more to society than Jesse ever will. I won't even get into Jesse's trail of corruption or that of his son's. If a black Clemson student wants revenge on Ben Tillman, they should take the high road and graduate from the great university that Clemson has become much in part due to the diversity that began with Mr. Gantt. That would really get under Ben's skin, right? Yeah, I but that's not the issue. The issue is him hanging on to relevance through creating more division.
Jesse could be much more beneficial to his race and society in general if he would use his platform to improve current problems and move forward rather than rehashing them from over 100 years ago. Dr. Martin Luther King he is not and never will be, but that won't keep him from trying. I'm not defending Ben Tillman's beliefs or actions from over a century ago, but changing a building's name won't change a thing...besides giving Jesse some self proclaimed relevance.

If Tillman knew Clemson had black students, he would demand his name removed.
