Phenominal Tool for keeping up w/the unc scandal (c/p)......

Aug 17, 2012, 8:06 AM

(a must read for those trying to keep with the academic/athletic fraud scandal at unc which, like Watergate, is coming out a drop or two at a time as the unc administration does everything possible to prevent the truth from public view)

UNC Scandal: Information primer

UNC Scandal: Information primer
The following pieces of information constitute a number of verified facts, in reference to the ongoing athletic and academic scandal at UNC-CH.

It is meant as a primer for visitors to this site, and a refresher to all others.

Many "outsiders" feel that many of UNC's issues are due to wild and baseless claims by "jealous rivals". After the Peppers situation, this site has received a larger-than-usual amount of traffic from around the country. This thread is simply a tool of information to show that the scandal at UNC is, to be sure, based on factual events and information.
The scandal (and the continued lack of action by UNC's administration and faculty) is an unfortunate stain on the culture of not only big-name sports, but also that of higher education. This affects all who support either of those endeavors, no matter which team's allegiance one might follow.

If anyone has a VERIFIABLE fact to be considered for addition, feel free to post. No rumors, speculation, etc. -- it must come with a source. If it is vetted and fits the overall purpose of this post, I'll try and add it when I get a chance. A big thanks to biggoodwolf for the original idea, and assistance with the information.

Updates (that are two or less days old) will be color-coded in red.

The information:

Via the revelation of the Julius Peppers’ transcript (and previously Marvin Austin's), it strongly appears that for at least part of the past fourteen years (and possibly much longer) UNC-CH may have placed certain student-athletes into a special degree program (African and Afro-American Studies) in which students could make As and Bs with little or no effort. In Peppers’ case, these grades helped balance his GPA against multiple Ds and Fs received in non-AFAM courses in an apparent effort to keep him eligible for sports participation. The Marvin Austin transcript is noted later.

It is known, in part via reports from the News & Observer and in part via an ESPN article from 2003, that Julius Peppers’ current NFL agent – Carl Carey – was originally (1998 - 2002) an academic counselor/tutor and an Adjunct Professor at UNC-CH. The ESPN article documents the large amounts of assistance he provided Peppers, including urging professors to give Peppers re-tests on final exams. Furthermore, Carey was later re-hired by UNC-CH in the summer of 2011 to teach a course in the AFAM department, all while he was an NFL agent (representing Julius Peppers, among others) and courting current Tarheel football player Robert Quinn. Link: tsu.compliance-assist.com/Cred...5b-0024e84f6678

It is known, via reports from News & Observer reporter Dan Kane, that UNC-CH academic advisors steered athletes into those aforementioned AFAM courses. Since academic advisors (and coaching staffs) have access to all of their athletes’ ongoing grades/transcripts, this would suggest that placement into those AFAM courses was for the specific purpose of keeping them academically eligible for sports participation. Link: http://www.newsobserver.com/ 2012/07/27/2228033/report-unc- chapel-hill-athletic.html

It is known, via the university’s own internal report, that UNC-CH set up numerous fictitious AFAM courses for which there were no classes, no instructors, no syllabus, and for which no attendance was required. The vast majority of these courses (and overall student ratios) were populated primarily by football and basketball players. This would strongly suggest a potential purpose of keeping students academically eligible for sports participation. 54 such potential courses were revealed from 2007 through 2011.
Link: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/sites/drupalblogs.ne wsobserver.com/files/docs/unc%20suspect%20enrollme nts.pdf

It is known, via that report’s same set of data, that the grades of many athletes in those courses were changed without a professor’s knowledge and/or permission, by way of the professor’s signature being forged.

It is known, via a follow-up report by tv/radio station WRAL, that athletes also signed up for Independent Studies courses in the AFAM department, and could have earned up to six credit hours for each individual I.S. course. This corroborates information posted on PackPride some four weeks earlier.

It is known, based on independent research, that there were a minimum of 26 extra “red flag” courses in the AFAM department from 2007 to 2011 that were NOT included on the university’s own internal report. Not coincidentally, over a dozen of these courses were either “Independent Studies” or “Field Research.”

It is known, via an article several years ago in the Indianapolis Star, that according to standout basketball player Sean May: Afro-American and African studies offered "more independent electives, independent study. I could take a lot of classes during the season. Communications, I had to be there in the actual classroom. We just made sure all the classes I had to take, I could take during the summer."

It is known, via that same Indianapolis Star article, that seven total players (including Sean May) from that 2005 men’s basketball NCAA championship team majored in African and Afro-American Studies.

It is known, via a database on the Indianapolis Star website, that three players from UNC’s 1993 men’s basketball NCAA championship team majored in African Studies.

It is known, via Dan Kane at the News & Observer, that Marvin Austin’s transcript showed he took a 400 level AFAM course the summer before his official Freshman year at UNC – prior to even taking basic English.

It is known, via official UNC documents, that former football coach Butch Davis did not use his university-issued cell phone for business calls. Instead, he used his personal "216" area code phone. The NCAA did not address this situation, and the battle between Davis' lawyers and those of the media continues in the court system. For the university to fail to monitor Davis' phone calls is a clear NCAA violation, yet that fact was ignored when the school was given its Public Infractions Report.

All of the above information was NOT included in the NCAA’s original investigation of the university, and has come to light subsequent to the NCAA’s University of North Carolina Public Infractions Report, dated March 12, 2012.

It is known, via multiple media reports, that over a dozen football players collected over $10,000 in parking tickets. Furthermore, at least one of these players had his tickets paid by Jennifer Wiley, an academic tutor once employed by the university for the purpose of helping athletes with their academics. It is documented that she was relieved of her duties for getting “too close” to some of the players. Link: http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/09/24/699742/tuto r-too-close-to-athletes.html

It is known, via multiple media reports, that UNC Head Football Coach Butch Davis later hired Miss Wiley to be his son’s personal tutor – AFTER she had been banned by the university from helping UNC athletes – and specifically football players on his own team. Same link as above.

It is known, via NCAA documents, that Miss Wiley continued to provide impermissible assistance on numerous football players’ assignments during the time that she worked directly for Butch Davis – yet was no longer employed by the university.

It is known, via multiple media reports after information was originally revealed on this site, that football player Michael McAdoo largely plagiarized an AFAM research paper. This revelation would eventually lead to the onset of scrutiny of Nyang'oro and the AFAM department. Links: www.poynter.org/latest-news/ma...r-media-follow/

It is known, via multiple media reports and NCAA documents, that while working for UNC-CH, Assistant Head Coach John Blake had direct contact with an NFL agent (Gary Wichard), and coordinated meetings between at least one of his players and Wichard. Multiple deposits were shown from Wichard's bank account to Blake's, totally well over $30,000 and explained by Blake as a "loan".

It is known, via multiple media reports and NCAA documents, that Marvin Austin accepted money from Wichard (by way of Austin’s former high school assistant coach Todd Amis) to fly to California and train at Wichard’s NFL facility. All of this was coordinated through Blake.

It is known, via multiple media reports and NCAA documents, that numerous football players had to sit out part or all of the 2010 season due to receiving impermissible benefits worth over $27,000.

It is known, via 1.) NCAA documents and 2.) a News and Observer report, that former football player Hakeem Nicks 1.) provided impermissible benefits to then-current players, and 2.) was retroactively ineligible during at least part of his playing career at UNC. Link: http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/07/20/2209329/unc -star-nicks-ineligible-during.html

It is known, via a News and Observer report, that former UNC football player Chris Hawkins was identified by the NCAA as a known runner for NFL agents. More importantly, Hawkins had open access to the UNC weight room during the Butch Davis tenure, and provided impermissible benefits to several players. He was later arrested for transporting cocaine across state lines. Link: http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/10/22/755808/unc- documents-identify-three-who.html

Three people associated with the scandal were essentially "fired", yet at the same time received hefty payouts:

John Blake - $74,500 payout

Butch Davis - $2.7 million payout

Julius Nyanga'oro - Pension on $159k salary

The following people associated with UNC (either currently or formally) have responded with a “no comment” to multiple media requests:

Jennifer Wiley – Former academic/athletic tutor for UNC-CH, and later hired to be the personal tutor for the family of Butch Davis.

Johnny Vines – Video coordinator for the UNC football team, and whose number showed up hundreds of times of John Blake’s phone records in close proximity with sports agents and/or Todd Amis.

Norris McCleary – Assistant strength coordinator for the UNC football team, and then special assistant coach, and whose number showed up hundreds of times of John Blake’s phone records in close proximity with sports agents and/or Todd Amis.

Todd Amis – Former high school assistant coach of Marvin Austin, who helped transfer money from NFL agent Gary Wichard to pay for various trips made by Austin.

Julius Nyang’oro – Former department head of UNC-CH’s AFAM department, and the teacher of the majority of fraudulent classes.

Deborah Crowder – Former administrative assistant of UNC-CH’s AFAM department, and was also known to have dated former UNC basketball player Warren Martin. Crowder's Facebook page also revealed that she was "friends" with a large number of UNC basketball and football players, both current and past. She retired in 2009 after working for the university for nearly 30 years, and was recently publicly blamed by the university (along with Nyang'oro) for the fraudulent activities within the department.

Wayne Walden – The head academic counselor of the UNC men’s basketball team until the summer of 2009. Prior to joining UNC in the earlier part of the decade, he held the same position at the University of Kansas for Roy Williams’ Jayhawks team. He came to UNC with Williams, and was responsible for scheduling all of the basketball players’ classes.
