One Theory On Expanding the Playoff

Dec 14, 2018, 4:24 AM

Seems like a new 8-team playoff has some real momentum now - possibly we'll see it by 2020; '21 or '22.

I'd like to see it set up w/out blindly following some of what other sports (or the NFL) do in structuring playoffs/tourneys.

Not too concerned w/giving Power 5 conferences auto bids, but ONLY if we follow the "BIG 12" NO DIVISION championship. Just the 2 best teams - period - in each conf.champ game. Otherwise, in a year like 2018 - what if Pitt had beaten CU? Or N.West'n had had beaten OhioST? An 8-team playoff would've included Pitt & N.West'n! That would be stupid. Keep the conference champ. games, but scrap "divisions."

Also - any FBS team should have to play 9 conference games. Not SOME play 8 & SOME play 9. They ALL should play 9 conf. games.

Independents? Can't let them in the playoffs playing only 12 games. They HAVE to play a 13th game (somewhere) in their schedule, & it MUST be a Power 5 opponent. That would only be fair. No having an "extra week" (like N. Dame) to prepare for a Clemson.

What about "at-large bids" & "Group of 5" teams? Maybe the best way is: After the Power 5 auto bids, the number 6 seed cannot have more than TWO losses. The 7th & 8th seeds cannot have more than ONE loss.

Get rid of ALL FCS teams on the schedule! FBS teams don't need to play glorified "scrimmages" w/FCS teams. They're meaningless & the fans hate them. Fans pay big money for tix & don't want to sit through a 59-3 game with "Clemson vs Wofford" or "Alabama vs S.W. Texas Teachers College."

Man up & play an all-FBS schedule!

Really dislike playoff
"byes." That's an unfair advantage having 1 less game to grind through. No team in an 8-team playoff should get to "skip" a game.

Also don't like other traditional seeding formulas in playoffs/tourneys. With just 4 teams it doesn't matter much, but WOULD if #1 plays #8 - even if #2 plays #7. 6&3 & 5&4 would have to slug it out to advance in that old model.

There's really no reason to follow the "old" seeding models. I'd prefer tougher matchups in the 1st round (quarter finals) so that teams "1-4" & teams "5-8" face each other - - like this (QUARTER FINALS): #1 plays #5; #2 plays #6; #3 plays #7; #4 plays #8.

In the SEMI-FINALS: winner of #1&5 plays winner of #2&6. Winner of #3&7 plays winner of #4&8.

After the semis, 2 teams will remain, & each would have survived TWO "top 8" opponents. The last team standing will have beaten THREE "top 8" teams & clawed its way to the TROPHY.

Pitt would have been in the ACCCG with or without divisions

They tied w/ Syracuse for the 2nd-best conference record and won the head-to-head.

Your idea of scrapping regular seeding for first round matchups is ludicrous. There must be an incentive to earn the highest seed possible. And with 8 teams, there is no practical way to avoid some teams getting an extra week off, if you still have conference championship games. And the SEC, for one, has already said they aren't giving up their CCG.

I don't understand your fixation with playing 9 conference games. Let the conferences decide that, but consider this. We are already playing 10 power five opponents almost every year, while many others only play 8 or 9. So maybe require 10 power five opponents, but allow the conferences to decide how many conference games should be played.

You can't require teams to play 10 P5 opponents

because that would literally eliminate all non-P5 teams from being able to make the playoffs.
