Stephen A. Smith’s top 5 ATL Athletes of All-Time.

Feb 5, 2019, 12:18 PM

https://atlallday.com/2019/01/30/first-take-stephen-smith-gives-perfect-top-five-atlanta-athletes/

It’s hard to argue with the top 2. This mentions Chipper getting dissed, but what about Maddox, Glavine, or
Smoltz? And Vick at 5? GTFO.

How I rank them:

1. Hammerin Hank.
2. Bobby Jones: 7 Majors plus 5 U.S. Amateurs and 1 British Amateurs
3. Deion: 8 times All-Pro First Team and defensive player of the year in 1994. Plus, good baseball player.
4. Greg Maddux: 4 Cy Young’s. 18 Gold Gloves.
5. Evander Holyfield: World Champ in two weight classes.
6. John Smotz: Over Glavine because of career as starter as well as closer.
7. Tom Glavine.
8. Chipper Jones
9. Dominque Wilkins: all NBA first team only once.
10. Pete Maravich
11. Julio Jones: 2 times all pro
12. Matt Ryan 1 time all pro
13.:Tommy Nobis: 1 time all pro
McGriff and Justice and a few other baseball players over Vick.

Vick may have been a better athlete than all of them.

Feb 5, 2019, 12:24 PM

Baseball guys aren't always great athletes, they are great baseball players. Big difference.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yea, just like Dominique could be a

Feb 5, 2019, 12:56 PM

better athlete than any of them because of his running and jumping ability as far as the true sense of the word athlete.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This mostly bugs me when talking about Tom Brady, who

Feb 5, 2019, 1:49 PM

is the best QB ever but has never been the best athlete on his team.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Henry Louis Aaron, obviously.

Feb 5, 2019, 12:31 PM

I'm biased toward the baseball, obviously, so I'll rank the baseball players.

After Aaron:

2. Chipper Jones
3. Greg Maddux
4. Tom Glavine
5. John Smoltz
6. Dale Murphy

I think it's appropriate for Deion to be in the mix due to cultural impact, but I wouldn't put him #2 overall, as he just played 4 seasons for the Braves (as a part-time player), and 5 for the Falcons (as a great player).

Dominique Wilkins is the obvious Hawk. Don't know enough about non-big-three sports to have comment on those athletes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Should have put Niekro at the end of that Braves list.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you really want so narrowly focus on Atlanta...

Feb 5, 2019, 12:58 PM [ in reply to Henry Louis Aaron, obviously. ]

You could argue that Chipper was more accomplished than Aaron, in Atlanta. But Aaron is by far the most important athlete in Atlanta history.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

what's the criteria here?

Feb 5, 2019, 12:49 PM

Played in Atlanta, grew up in Atlanta, stayed in an Atlanta hotel over a long weekend?
What about suburbs?

Herschel count? Athens is pretty close. What about Bobby Jones? Calvin Johnson?

Big, wide pool here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It looks like it's talking about playing

Feb 5, 2019, 12:51 PM

for teams in Atlanta, or in the case of individual sports, being from Atlanta?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have Bobby Jones #2. Good pull

Feb 5, 2019, 12:58 PM [ in reply to what's the criteria here? ]

on CJ.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's just too nebulous

Feb 5, 2019, 1:16 PM

I think of Hank Aaron as an Alabama athlete, not so much Atlanta. Is he also a Milwaukee athlete? I tend to think of where the person was born/raised, not where he played. Heck some career wanderers could be claimed by a dozen cities or states.

When you combine Atlanta team guys with individual "born/raised/lived" in Atlanta, it's too wide a net for as big a place as Atlanta is.

Re: Stephen A. Smith’s top 5 ATL Athletes of All-Time.

Feb 5, 2019, 2:02 PM

I'd put the basketball players at the top. Soccer players next then football and last baseball. Imo, that's the pecking order for athletes. I can't see many baseball players giving what either of the other's contribute in athletic efforts, therefor I have no possible way to compare them.

To each his own.

I think baseball players are on par with nascar drivers and golfers as far as athleticism goes. Its a skill not so much athleticism

Very false

Feb 5, 2019, 3:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Stephen A. Smith’s top 5 ATL Athletes of All-Time. ]

Speed and vertical jump are lesser attributes for some positions on the field, of course, but those are not the only aspects of athleticism. Hand-eye coordination is obviously extreme in baseball. Flexibility, reaction time, arm strength, hand strength, lower body strength, etc., etc., etc.

if anybody remember "The Superstars" from the 70's-80's

Feb 5, 2019, 4:16 PM

it was a competition between stars of all different sports. Plus they had team competitions.

The track and field guys were outstanding, along with football players.
Baseball teams held their own in the team thing vs football.

SuperTeams
A companion competition, this event would pit the two World Series teams and the two Super Bowl teams in a playoff-type match using all the Superstars events, with some team events added such as Hawaiian rowing and the Tug-of-War. The running, swimming, and cycling events were relays, with the cycling done on tandem bikes; the obstacle course (which had its blocking sleds replaced by monkey bars similar to those used in the women's competition, as it was felt that the football teams would have too much of an advantage over the baseball teams) was decided by best combined time. The team that won the most events in each semi-final advanced to the SuperTeams finals where an ultimate champions would be crowned.[1] The New York Yankees advanced to the World Series in 1977, 1978, and 1981, and was eligible to participate in these events held the early in the following year, however Yankees owner George Steinbrenner refused to allow his players to compete, as he had several of his top players under lucrative long term guaranteed contracts that required players to get ownership permission to participate in outside athletic activities, which in this case Steinbrenner refused to grant. In those years, loser of the ALCS in those years took the Yankees place, and in all three years that team ultimately won the competition.

In the 1978 final, the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Royals split the first six events, so the tug-of-war would decide the winner. However, while there was a time limit in the preliminary rounds, there was none in the final, and after 75 minutes in which neither team came particularly close to winning, the organizers declared the event (and, as a result, the competition) a tie.

This is going to blow everyones mind and some will scream racist, but Pistol Pete was the first white, but black player. He was the only white man at the time that could play as good as the black guys. Its truth, look it up in your Grade 10 history books.

Putting him below Nique is a bad idea.
