Perspective from an Oklahoma fan

First of all, congrats on the season that you all have had. Watson seems to be a special player and is fun to watch.

My thoughts on the game- I expect a great game, as these teams are two of the most complete teams in the country. I don't expect either defense to shut down the opposing quarterbacks, but whoever is able to slow down the opposing QB more will win. You all seem to enjoy bringing up last years game. As a Sooner fan, that was embarrassing. You can't completely dismiss what happened, but I don't think you can look too much into that. There has been a complete change in personnel and coaching staff. As far as Shepard- he was injured! I believe Clemson has also improved and obviously DW is a much better quarterback than Stoudt.

From a completely unbiased opinion, I'd probably give Clemson the slight advantage. It's hard to pick against a team that doesn't know how to lose. I'm expecting a great game between two great teams and programs. Looking forward to Thursday!

Agree with you on most points

Ability to run the ball and special team play will also be huge factors.

It weould be nice to see us get something out of special teams this game. We seem to have lots of skill guys to get so little from that aspect

Agree and I believe you have a very realistic prediction. It will be a good game and probably neither team will dominate the other. But until #4 proves me wrong, my vote is with him! No losses in a game that he starts and is able to finish. GO TIGERS!

Good analysis...

I don't think any Clemson fan that is being serious thinks that last years game has anything to do to this years game.

I think it will be a very good game. The only thing that gives me confidence is how Oklahoma players are talking in the media. Hear me out...
If Oklahoma honestly thought that Clemson wasn't that good ( like they have been talking) they would be very "status quo" in the media. They would have a quiet confidence, because they would know deep down that they are better. But they have been talking a lot saying how " Watson isn't that good" or "the defense has lost a couple steps"... You only do that if you are trying to convince yourself that it is the truth...

Just my honest opinion...

very good post by an OU fan, very reasonable

I happen to agree with you fan4 - it may not mean a thing, but I whole-heartedly agree with you that the "behavior" or "comportment" (using big words I don't understand) between the two teams is glaring. The Tigers are a reflection of their QB - calm and under control, instilling complete confidence without the need for bravado. The other QB seems to be mad about everything and everyone

We'll see, should be a great game

Re: Good analysis...

Posted: Dec 28, 2015 10:30 PM

Agreed.. I won't be surprised by any outcome. I think the tiger will win but your kidding yourself if you don't think any team in the playoff can't beat any of the other teams.. It will come down to who shows up on gameday..

I'll take the quiet confident tigers 42-34... With OU having the ball last with a chance to tie.. They may score the last td to make it 42-40 but won't get the two point conversion..

I don't think I have heard OU players say anything other than clemson has a lot of good athletes. In reference to DW, I have heard them say Baker is a better QB (of course theyes are going to back up their teammate) and they think if they can control DW's run game, then they will be successful. Also they mentioned seeing so weak points in Clemson's defense. I don't see how that shows they are secretly insecure. In fact, clemson players have been more vocal about how this Sooners team is not that much different from last year's team. U are welcome to provide a link if u have one. I'm sure I have missed an interview or two.

Personally I think if we lose, it will be because of special teams. I don't know enough about OU to know any weaknesses although I think our D line will be a little beefier than what y'all have seen so far. Should be a classic!

Good. Now go tell your whiney QB and his punk teammates to shut their pie holes and worry more about getting their butts handed to them. By the way, it's Game Week so why don't you take your "expectings" and go away.

Re: Perspective from an Oklahoma fan

If we lose, their talk will bite them in the ###.

Also, a lot of what you all are seeing is taken out of context by the media. For example, Sanchez's quote comparing DW to Boykin. If you read the full interview, you will see that he never said Boykin was a better athlete than DW.

He said Boykin was the BEST athlete. Go back and read it again!!

Re: Perspective from an Oklahoma fan

There's a difference between best athlete and best quarterback.

Re: Perspective from an Oklahoma fan

Posted: Dec 28, 2015 10:23 PM

Not when comparing two athletes in the same position...and one has equal or better stats than the other.

Athlete A has:
257/396 completions for a 64.9% completion rate, 3575 yards, averaging 9.0 yds/pass, and 31 TD's passing, long of 70 yards
127 rushing attempts for 612 yards, averaging 5.0 yds/carry, 9 TD's, long of 69
total yards = 4,187 and 40 TD's

Athlete B has:
287/413 completions for a 69.5% completion rate, 3512 yards, averaging 8.5 yds/pass, and 30 TD's passing, long of 67 yards
163 rushing attempts for 887 yards, averaging 5.4 yards/carry, 11 TD's, long of 63
total yards = 4,399 and 41 TD's

Looks to me like Athlete B is an equal or possibly slightly better athlete, basing on near level passing stats, but having a bit stringer rushing stats...

Athlete A is Boykin, B is Watson.

Re: Perspective from an Oklahoma fan

Posted: Dec 28, 2015 10:25 PM

also keep in mind, Boykin = senior...Watson = true sophomore.

The writers here on Tnet are trolling us hard. That's a recent development. There are so many drama queens here (I used to be one of a few) that enjoy getting our knickers twisted I'm guessing Tnet's writers are just playing to their audience.

We've been trash talked a time or two this season but not by a team with a pulse. Cuse comes to mind. Somehow because they scored a few points on an over rated LSU team they deluded themselves into believing they had a shot at beating us.

Don't let the close games we were in set you back. Our coach doesn't run the score up on cupcakes. When our HC sees that we can score at will he believes he controls the game. He calls for substitutions. We've played three deep at just about every position and emptied the shelf in games most considered tight. Our coaches thrive on building depth not impressing the FPI and S&P rankings.

They say it takes six months to physically heal from a total ACL surgery. They also say it takes another six for the mind to comprehend that the ACL has really healed and won't collapse when stressed. Consider that when you consider who Clemson is and what you are facing.

In 1988, OK felt that playing against Clemson was "beneath" them. Clemson won.

In 2014, OK felt that playing against Clemson was "beneath" them. Clemson won.

Listening to the trash talk from the OK side, they apparently feel that Clemson is, once again, "beneath" them.

Well, let's just see who is "beneath" whom at the end of the game.

Spot the ### ball and let's have at it! Go, Tigers!

He never specified that. Either way, it isn't a huge sample size to look at and is not relevant.

Last year's game kind of is. At least moreso than 1988.

Posted: Dec 28, 2015 11:27 PM

3 times this year, Clemson has gotten a good deal of bulletin board material from opponents and the sports media. 3 times this year the team came out with a chip on its shoulder and proved them wrong.

In bowl games Clemson has a habit of playing better when disrespected. Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Tennessee come to mind.

You are correct that this doesn't affect the game on Thursday, however, neither does OU's history.

Re: Last year's game kind of is. At least moreso than 1988.

I like it when they disrespect us, I like it even more when the team gets quiet. This is a focused group. I saw a smack talking miami come out all amped up on Steve Elliot soup pushing everyone around acting like 40 year old virgins in a ##### house. That worked out just like I like it. This team knows what the big stage feels like and they aren't nervous tonight.

I was, in fact, just referring to the two previous bowl games. I remember (painfully) the regular season games back during the Switzer days. Back then, we were just "cannon fodder" for the dominant Oklahoma team. Maybe that's what prompted Switzer to comment in 1988 that "Oklahoma deserved a better bowl game and opponent." In any case, it was nice seeing him have to eat his words. I never really liked him... I felt like Oklahoma was a class act, but Switzer was anything but. Last year, Stoops made a similar comment before the Russell Athletic Bowl, and again, the coach had to eat his words.

I guess coaches will never learn to just button it up and save it for the gridiron.

I do appreciate your post, and hope that you don't take my comments personally. I think the game might be a classic... the time for talk is almost over... spot the ball and let's git 'er done!

Go Tigers!

If Clemson plays like we have the past 3 or so games, y'all will win. However, We have played well against great competition this year. I'm hoping our defense comes ready to play and expect they will. Oklahoma is a good football team, and anyone that expects a blowout from either side is mistaken. I'm calling like a 42-37 kinda game. Hope the tigers are on the winning end.

I would say may the best team win. Also, I would like to add that who ever loses this game didn't really lose anything as only 4 teams in the entire nation make it this far. Of course, nothing outside of a national title will do for my Tigers. So I honestly hope we win and if we're lucky we will get to play against Alabama and crush their hopes and dreams in the New Year...

Your objective thoughts are valued.

Posted: Dec 28, 2015 10:10 PM

Thank you for sharing your insight.
There are two details that aren't mentioned so much.
1-the Tiger OCs and qb coach are undefeated. In fact, Streeter helped Cole look like Tom Brady...when every tiger fan knows he didn't look that way against Ga Tech. The OU defense (that is pretty much the same squad as last year-including coaches) got gashed by the Tigers time and again. Want to know what's coming? Ask MJS.
2-The two main OU yardage gainers (Perine and Shepard) know exactly what is coming their way. Trevor can tell Baker all day about SL90 and BB10, but the walk-on won't know exactly how it feels until Thursday afternoon. I predict we will probably see Knight on the field by the 3rd quarter.
I am extremely biased. But I have seen my favorite team in a rebuilding year do something no other team was able to do in 2015.
OU will have to score 42 just to keep up.
Thanks again for sharing...you might want to go back to stealing land now.

Has given up 12 catches this year. I would take a play from LSU book and fake an injury.

The more you refuse last year, the more you run it through the Xerox machine this year. No, you won't see 40-6, but you will still see Orange dominance and another Perine shutdown.

Clemson 34-17

kind of like your coaches last year when we beat your ### b/c they didn't expect no tight end sets...

Also...no one here believes UNC was toughest ACC comp...that was clearly FSU and will continue to be FSU for years to come.

I think you should be concerned about our DL eating your OL's lunch Thursday...I'm concerned if that doesn't happen, that's for #### sure.

I am not saying Baylor is better than y'all but they looked better than y'all did against UNC, with their whole team beat up. Obviously that was just one game and clearly your team has played much better games, but you can't overlook it.

You've gotta be kidding...

Baylor 49, UNC 38
Clemson 45, UNC 37

So what, a FG difference, UNC also needing to do an onside kick in the bowl, and you think that is SO much better?? Looks quite similar.

Re: Guess UNC got caught off guard...

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 1:05 AM

The Baylor scout team beat them, that's the difference.

Re: Guess UNC got caught off guard...

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 2:05 AM

So how many games did Baylor play without a break leading up to tonight? Clemson hasn't played to their full potential yet but what they have done is win and win consistently it doesn't matter if it takes 3 points to beat a team or 100 points they have and I believe will continue to find ways to have at least one more score than their opponents when the clock hits zero!

Re: Guess UNC got caught off guard...

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 2:08 AM

I was just comparing games. I still wouldn't bet against Clemson. Hard to bet against a team that has a winning mentality!

Re: Guess UNC got caught off guard...

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 1:34 AM

Did you watch the game? Baylor looked dominant and that was without a QB. Game was not as close as score indicated. UNC never had a shot to win the game, unlike against Clemson. Baylor's win was more impressive. It has nothing to do with the game on Thursday, but I did find it interesting.

"UNC never had a shot to win the game" - well said -

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 1:47 AM

though obviously just as reflective of the Clemson game as the Baylor game, as UNC never had the ball in the 2nd half and in a 1-score game against either team.

UNC never fumbled on the 1-foot line against Clemson either. Never played without their one decent Defensive lineman against Clemson either. Never had their best deep threat WR ejected against Clemson either.

Yes, interesting.

Just like Oklahoma never played against Baylor's "scout team" with 3 weeks to prepare either.

But these are just minor details really. Nothing of any real importance.

Not like 40-6 anyway.

Now there's a stat that speaks for itself, and tellingly,

until Thursday at least, refutes all arguments.

Re: "UNC never had a shot to win the game" - well said -

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 1:58 AM

The Baylor team that OU faced is significantly different than the team UNC faced tonight (no Stidham, Coleman, Linwood etc). Clearly you didn't watch OU-Baylor.

And I'm glad you're content with the Russell Athletic Bowl trophy in the trophy case.

Re: "UNC never had a shot to win the game" - well said -

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 2:04 AM

And I'm not implying that I'm glad y'all won. That was as embarrassing as it gets. It was a #### show. But this is a different season and last year won't have much of an impact on this years game, I would imagine.

It could be argued that you are content,

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 2:08 AM

with the 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl trophey. OU is not facing UNC, they are facing Clemson. The game that was played today has absolutely nothing to do with the Orange Bowl. Despite recent events I still like Clemson's chances.

Congrats on your Baylor Bears bowl win. I'm sure you are ecstatic.
May Baylor carry their momentum to great success, hopefully winning the BIG12 for years to come.

Clearly you don't like me comparing games/teams? I never said it would impact the game, just thought it was interesting to bring up since you all think the Big 12 is so weak.

And no, I think Baylor is a slimy program and that Briles is a scum bag. Obviously the same could be said for UNC.

Baylor, UNC - 2 teams, 0 defense....

[1]
Posted: Dec 30, 2015 2:25 AM

meaningless when it comes to playing Clemson.

I think Messrs. Knight and Sheppard found that out resoundingly last year.

And, well, at least last year's Clemson team went home with a trophy from the RAB;

tell me, did Okie-dokie at least get a participation trophy?

Simply put: Does it not bother you the realization that only 2 teams all year long had the ball in the 2nd half against Clemson in a 1-possession game? It seems you would be a little more interested in that little factoid - a rather "dominating stat" if there ever as one about a team you happen to play this Thursday - rather than obsessing on a Baylor team you didn't even play...

or will Okie be happy to "almost win" against the Tigers like Notre Dame, or have a "good loss" like FSU?

hey maybe you can yet get that participation trophy this year then...

Re: Baylor, UNC - 2 teams, 0 defense....

I know mediocre trophies are a thing to brag about around Clemson, but come on. Btw that little tidbit you are alluding to isn't very scary seeing as how the only exceptions are for the ONLY good teams clempsum has played all year. We saw how good the 2nd place ACC team was tonight.

Re: Baylor, UNC - 2 teams, 0 defense....

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 11:24 AM

Glad you think they are the second place ACC team...not just the more dominant team on the other side of the division....the actual second place ACC team whipped Florida 27-2 (only only had 1 other loss...from a fluke blocked kick for a pick 6, other than the loss to #1 Clemson). But don't let facts get in the way.

they still turn out to be trolls.

We say: "UNC never had the ball in a 1 possession game in the 2nd half" as a means of pointing out how dominated the UNC game was; they come back with "but aren't you all proud!"

pitiful....

Just because you use nice vocabulary and nice tone,

doesn't mean you're ready to face facts - F...A...C...T...S.

FACT: Clemson got bored with UNC; Baylor had a game on their hands until UNC fumbled into the end zone.

Whatever....

I just checked the score, and it's still, and will always be, 40-6.

Until Thursday, just go butt-hurt somewhere else.

Re: no matter how these trolls disguise themselves

The only fact that is correct: last years score.

Not sure how its a "fact" that Clemson got bored with UNC. Were you on the sideline and in the locker room with the team?

Re: no matter how these trolls disguise themselves

Posted: Dec 30, 2015 7:19 PM

The defense got complacent. They were not as aggressive as they were for the first 3 quarters. That is FACT. I wouldn't say bored. They got complacent they were up 18 and the offense had just got the ball back and that fluke interception and they cut it to 11. If it wasn't for that INT Clemson was on the way to drive again. They had already had to drives over 96 yards for touchdowns. They couldn't stop Clemson , Clemson stopped Clemson. Same tale all year. This offense is rarely stopped by opposing defenses this year. They are stopped by false starts by the WRs half the time. It will be a good game. I can't wait to see what happens.

Thank you for the insightful response.

Interesting...you want to point to Baylor when discussing "Big 12 weak/not weak), but not #2 total offense Texas Tech vs LSU (LSU won 56-27)....or ACC's VT beating Tulsa...

Most have said that the b12 sucks at defense.

Not that they suck overall. HTH.

Content with 7 national championships if you want to talk about the past. I hope your content with your Russell athletic bowl champs t shirts.

Where did I talk about the past?

You tried and you failed. But congrats on your history.
Currently Clemson is #1.
Currently Clemson is undefeated.

Nothing I have seen in the bowl games played so far this season changes my opinion of the BIG12. Yes they have explosive offenses. I was impressed with Baylor today. Still I don't think that Oklahoma has faced a defense as talented as Clemson's. The truth will be revealed in a couple days. I still like Clemson's chances.

psstttt...one of those "explosive offenses" (#2 in total offense to be exact) lost to LSU last night 56-27. Guess they didn't want to be there,

if that makes you feel better. Unc made an admirable comeback

against us but they really only had a shot to tie.

Honestly, it looked to me that unc wasn't prepared for Baylor to run wildcat every play...it's difficult to adjust that much during a game, especially if you don't have a standout D. Still, a badly timed TO kept it from being much closer.

Yay, b12.

Re: Guess UNC got caught off guard...

Same could be said about the Clemson/UNC game...

But let's not get facts in the way of your biased discussion.

Really...we shouldn't look at any facts of the scores to say the final score wasn't an indication of the game...

UNCheat=/=our greatest ACC opponent.

HTH.

One at least had a 19 QBR QB playing for 2.5 quarters...

so I'd say no. Otherwise, Bram would have been in and beat OU from second 1 of the game.

I wonder if Texas had the same attitude?

With that being said. Both fan bases must know that these two teams are playing each other because both teams would beat Alabama in the first round and ESPN didn't want another early out by the Sec. They are hoping for both teams to be mentality spent for the championship. Hopefully MSU gives bama all they can handle( I think they will) because who ever wins this, is the best team in the country.
