Clemson defense in the National Championship game:

7 three and outs
7 tackles for loss
held Bama to 2 of 15 on 3rd down.


And try this stat:

Ohio State 3 of 14 on third downs
Alabama 2 of 15 on third downs

Ohio State and Bama combined 5 of 29 on third downs. That is amazing.

What I like the most is that 3 and outs usually mean you won on 1st and 2nd down in a big way. If you put almost any team in a 3 and long the odds of them getting the first down are so low that your defense doesn't have to risk a huge blitz to stop them on 3rd down.

If you win the battle on 1st down you set yourself up for getting off the field. What Clemson has done brilliantly is getting tackles for loss on first and second down so we can put ourselves into a good position on 3rd down. :)
