So with Chad at the helm...we never chose defense first..

Feb 19, 2015, 6:22 PM

With Scott and Elliot, do you think we receive the ball and go for the jugular...or do we choose defense first?

TIA in advance for you comments. Only well informed opinions welcome.

We chose defense first most of the time. It's the smart play because you get the ball to start the second half.

what is moast intriguing to me is the offensive engineering position.

you will choose to defer to the second half, instead of choosing defense. If you choose defense, the other team can choose to receive in the second half also.

I've been working on this trick play I want to share.

Feb 19, 2015, 8:04 PM

When we want to put our defense on the field first but the other team chooses to play defense first we can just punt the ball on first down. I've been hanging on the bored a long time and I'm certain I'm the first one to mention this strategery.

It would seem to defer and hopefully gain field position is the best plan most of the time but the opponent has a lot to do with it too. Against a weaker team may want to ball and get a lead early.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL!

Feb 19, 2015, 8:54 PM

You can't be sirius! Choosing to play defense isn't even an option at the kickoff, moran. You can either kick, receive, or defer. Did you mean defer???

Re: LOL!

But you listed defense as a choice...to kick means to play defense, just like receive means to play offense.

HTH this helps

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LOL!

Feb 19, 2015, 9:03 PM

He is wrong etiher way you have three choices.....

Play Offense
Defer
Play Defense

No coaches should ever chose number 3 but some have.

To Defer you are basically choosing Defense but not really.

Feb 22, 2015, 6:39 AM

;) I would've chosen Rod Hall for the return man. Tough call, but I probably have to go with Landry as my place kicker/punter.

Hey you may be on to something

Feb 22, 2015, 1:33 PM

Did we win the tip against Duke? If we did, then it's obviously we should never choose offense first. If we didn't win the toss, then obviously we should never choose defense first.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

You certainly can choose defense...it happened this past season in the Texas-UCLA game. CMelton, you don't have to go anywhere because Charlie Strong obviously didn't choose to do that, but Desmond Jackson's dumb ### did. It's a dumb option, but it's an option.

Re: So with Chad at the helm...we never chose defense first..

Feb 20, 2015, 3:49 AM

In 2014, house money was to put the defense on the field first. Three reasons:

1) Pinion rarely had a kickoff return, which meant teams generally got it on the 25 yard line....Which brings me to

2) Clemson's defense was #1 in TFLs and 3rd down conversions, meaning that most teams only averaged on the first drive a net of 3-5 yards....

3) The message last year was "win field position!" When we did that, great things happened.

Your question is a difficult one to answer without seeing the 2015 team. I would say that if you put the defense in first and they are as good as they were in 2014, you will get the same or better offensive results in 2015.

Blatently obvious, but haven't seen it mentioned. So,

Feb 22, 2015, 7:08 AM

you certainly want to be on D first in an OT situation. Feel extremly dumb for explaining the obvious, but as I've seen, you never know what's "obvious" around here means. ;) Anyways, this gives you the luxury of knowing whether you need 3 or 6 points to tie/win the game. Personally, I believe it to be good practice to defer and receive the second half kickoff. This way you can implement halftime adjustments before the D (coaches) can react to said adjustments, much less relay it to their players (who still have to execute). Plus, if you're already up at the half, it's icing on the cake to be going on O first in an attempt to expand your lead.
