Our D has got to get them off the field. They are very good

on 3rd down conversions--especially when they need long yardage. Winston is 11 for 14 attempts on third and long. I used to refer to 3rd down for Clemson as "misery down" because it seemed even though we could stop them cold on 1st and 2nd down the other team would find a way to convert even on long down and distances. We can't have "misery downs" in this one. Our D has got to stop them and take them off the field.

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are literally #1 in the country in 3rd down defense.

I remember those days as you described them. Horrible. But this defense is different. 23.7% of the time the opponent doesn't convert the 3rd down. First in the country, and that's with us playing Georgia's high-powered offense and playing scrubs against a bunch of opponents late in the game. Honestly, it's a great performance so far. Hopefully we can keep it going.

Using that website I also ventured into the Passing Yards allowed. Pitt, MD, and BC all rank outside the top 50 in passing yards per game (58,63,& 67 respectively).

While Clemson currently sits at 18, averaging abut 186 yds per game. Those open wide receivers Winston is used to seeing aren't going to be quite as open on Saturday. Will be very interesting to see how he does in obvious passing downs.

Plus, you have to keep those stats in context.

We are #18 and Pitt, MD and BC are 58, 63 and 67. But none of those guys have put in their back-ups much as we have, allowing teams that are down to rack up a bit more yardage than they would if we continued to go full strength.

Our defense is #1 in 3rd down defense and #1 in sacks. Aside from scoring defense (10th), there aren't many other categories you'd take more pride in than those two.

TFLs. Playing on the other side of the line. By the way, #1.***

Winston has NEVER played ....

Oct 14, 2013, 10:27 AM

under the kind of pressure and in an environment as loud or hostile as he will face Saturday night. That would be quite the challenge for anyone let alone a freshman.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Winston has never had Vic Beastley coming at him either

We're great on 3rd down conversion defense and I think it continues.
