Duke-UNC best rivalry in the U.S. sports world?
Mar 3, 2018, 11:01 PM
|
|
They keep saying this, and it's up there based on the success of the two programs but not convinced it's the best. They do have 3 NCs a piece since 2000 and great programs starting in the 60s, so it's a strong argument.
The others in the running:
Red Sox-Yanks in MLB (both teams aren't both in the running near as often as Duke-UNC) Packers-Bears in NFL (same as above) Alabama-Auburn in college football (same as above) Ohio State-Michigan in college football (same as above) Celtics-Lakers in NBA (same as above) Dodgers-Giants in MLB (same as above) Cowboys-Redsins in NFL (same as above)
I think by trying to prove it wasn't the best, I just proved to myself it is. Now, if you want to include individual sports also, you'd throw in Evert-Navratilova, Nicklaus-Palmer/Trevino/Watson, Ali-Frazier, Federer-Nadal.
So, IMO, it's the best ever in team sports but would be rivaled by Chrissie-Martina and Federer-Nadal if individual sports were included.

I think this rivalry is unique in the fact that the two schools are so close together geologically and have such great success in basketball. It is arguably one of the best rivalries in all of sports.

Excellent list and because of the ...........

proximity I'd give Duke-NC the slight nod over Yanks-Sox.
Bama-Auburn in college football for sure. Army-Navy also but it doesn't have the animosity.
Lakers-Celts has lost some luster. And IMO Dallas-Washington isn't what it once was either.

That’s not a good rivalry. They both suck. It’s just a pull on the heartstrings and makes you being a false narrative. Great school and thank you for your service, but you sports suck.

It's really based on how close the schools are together.

The most obvious best rivalry to miss the list: Clemson vs FSU in football.

Best fight all time for me though, was Hagler vs Hearns, but that wasn't really a rivalry.

Auburn-Alabama and OSU-Michigan are both bigger, because football is bigger. Then you probably have the Red Sox and Yankees above college football.

Baseball is done. The heart of baseball is sitting in the stands and watching the game. All TV camera do is follow the ball. That's not the only place where the game is won and lost.
NCAA football is now king and therefor I'd go with the Bama/AU game as king.

Yes. But everyone on here will make fun of K and Williams. But it’s the best and they are the best of the best. It’s just the truth. Sucks, but it is.
Coach K and Tom Izzo are on just another stratosphere that no one else can ever touch. It’s reality.
