Otherwise known as Calhoun Memorial Hwy

Calhoun County... or Wade Hampton school (or Blvd)... maybe Hampton county? That's just to start, of course. Or we can embrace our history and not repeat it. No need to erase it. These geniuses want to ban Huck Finn!

US 1 between Augusta and Aiken is named Jefferson Davis Hwy...but it's named for a Yankee general.

He is somewhat controversial though, because he was indirectly responsible for the deaths of many slaves during Sherman's March through GA.

Many slaves had forsaken their homes in order to accompany the Union Army across GA, but they were always in the trail position (they were literally 'camp followers'). Well, Gen Hood's Confederates were also in the trail position, farther back. Gen Davis' orders were to destroy all bridges after the Yanks had crossed them, but his men didn't wait to ensure the escaping slaves had crossed safely before destroying them.

Many slaves drowned. Even though most couldn't swim, they were more afraid of being recaptured by the Confederates than of trying to swim across the numerous rivers and creeks of GA's marshy lowlands.

So Jeff Davis does not have a flawless personal history, either.

Huck Finn is one of the most banned books in the English language. Greenville county school libraries fight to keep it on the shelves. There's a process to have it removed and someone files a complaint every few years. To Kill a Mockingbird is another frequently banned book.

And of course, that’s asinine.

Those are two of the books that most illustrate the kind of racial prejudice that used to exist, because they are set within the context of their times. They entertain while educating. Or educate while entertaining. Kids end up asking the most questions when reading books like that, and that becomes the most opportune moment for them to begin searching for value in their own dealings with others.

Probably the two greatest American novels in history.

Huck Finn and Mockingbird are absolute treasures.

So the same person that refuses to say Clemson as his University for NFL game introduction and holds a grudge is now the voice of reason for historical namesakes? Nice.
