Online Ordering/Societal Regression
Dec 3, 2020, 12:39 PM
|
|
I'm in the process of wrapping up my peer reviewed, scientific study regarding the phenomena of 'online ordering'. Obviously, I have reduced the scope to only include restaurant to-go orders, this does not include things like Target car side to go, etc.
I originally embarked on this study due to my wife's flat out refusal to use a telephone for its original intent. The woman simply will not call anyone. If our child was dying she would be googling Anderson County Online Emergency check-in or something. I have begun to notice many, many people are becoming like this. People might not even have vocal cords 100 years from now. But I digress...
I won't delve into the weeds with all of my data, and don't quite have the time to put everything in layman's terms...but the gist of it is you're spending at least 2 minutes and 43 seconds longer ordering online as opposed to phoning in the order. Not only that, your risk of the order being lost in no man's land (LOOKING AT YOU RED ROBIN) is virtually zero. You're saving time and ensuring quality by calling your order in. It's also much easier to make custom changes, like chips instead of fries. Or maybe you want some extra ranch with your chicken tendies....
The details don't matter, but what does matter is the FACT that calling in is superior to online ordering. This seems to jive with other societal trends I've noticed though, wherein we seem to be making simple tasks much more complicated than they ever need to be. Having to acquiesce to everybody's 'systems' that seemingly DGAF about customer service or satisfaction, communicating via texts instead of words causing a 2 minute conversation to turn into a 45 minute one...
The list go on, but I wanted to get this out there in the hope it could save just one life/marriage.

I can 1 click order on Amazon.
I don't order zaxby's by phone nor by credit card. Or any other food for that matter.
So what is it you are calling people for? What do you order by phone? Perhaps I just need to get to know you better.

We have our restaurants we like, and when it's too cold to go by boat, I call it in.....Or my wife spends 20 minutes ordering online. Granted, now that students are gone we can probably go dine in at places in Clemson. Although my son is 'finding his voice', so going out to eat with him is pretty much a nonstarter right now.

called in an order to Columbo's and the guy that took my order forgot to tell someone and they had to start making it after I already arrived
It seems that you can make way more customizations in an app or online as opposed to over the phone, you can do tons in Taco Bell app and I do know that they don't accept phone orders but you cannot do as much in the drive thru that you can do in the app
I don't mind calling, but I feel that the order is much more customizable in an app or online

Don't pick it up....no, DON'T you dare pick that phone up until you are finished with me......finish with me dammmitt.....AND THEY PICK UP. And YOU have stand there and to wait on some idiot calling to ask if they have some Josh Groban album, or what the special of the day is, or some other nonsense they are too lazy to get in their car to drive down and see for themselves.
At least online removes that potential bloody bare-handed murder scenario.

we find in today's society, which is directly correlated to.......Everything being online and confined within a 'system'. The younger people just don't know what to do anymore, you say hello to them and it throws them for a loop.

I do think, like, fast food has ruined the average Americans diet, cheap goods that can be shipped in two days will have some serious repercussions.

that you dismissed as a negative .
The overall core premise of your thesis is correct, but I think misaligned. There's a growing number of people that don't want to make a phone call anymore - the core issue.
Online ordering in general is faster, don't need to give my credit card number over the phone (key if someone else is picking it up and you wanted to pay), typically more customizable if the online ordering is properly set up, and they get the customizations correct more often because it's printed right in front of the poor minimum wage worker assembling it.
