He should of been the full time return man here at Clemson, at least on punts.

Didn't he have some issues when it came to

fielding punts? The way the offence has been cooking the past 3 years, just catching the punt was more important than trying to return it.

My Opinion, that would be just dumb to use a receiving talent like Sammy as any part of a kick or punt team guy. I would never risk him being run through by a Ben Boulware minded type LB on a return team, NEVER!!!

Sammy is a franchise WR. Why would anyone waste

May 2, 2014, 12:00 PM

him when he is a mediocre return man?

He had like one or two good returns in college. But the man is a freak receiver.

Mediocre??? Are you serious?

Maybe mediocre was a strong word, but there are certainly more talented return men out there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mediocre is fair ... how many TD's did Sammy have

May 2, 2014, 9:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Sammy is a franchise WR. Why would anyone waste ]

in the return game while at Clemson? I don't recall any.

Spiller / Ford were much better.

Not taking anything away from #2 .... just they way it is.

Sammy had 1 but how many kick returns have we had for TD's since he quit being the main kick returner? 0. In cl

I agree. Sammy never seemed to have that

side to side quickness that Spiller had. Sammy seemed to need more open space so he could just flat outrun them.

Agree he isn't a great return man. Everytime spiller got the ball you were thinking td.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spiller had better more experienced blockers on return!!!

May 3, 2014, 1:02 AM

Sammy is very talented but receiving kickoffs deep in the end zone and having poor blocking doesn't help.

The blocking on the punt returns were awful too!!

Put Sammy in same situation Spiller had and he would do pretty good.
I don't ever thing he could have the side to side quickness CJ had but he is really fast and tough in straight line speed.

That what you want in a returner on kick & punt returns.
That side to side stuff is only good if you have great blockers ahead of and around you. If not, you taking a chance of getting leveled by one of those kamakazi defenders looking to make a name for himself or just dying to get on the field for more playing time. Straight liners with speed is more productive in the NFL. One or two moves and downfield from there. Anything longer and the rest of the defenders is one step closer and closing for the big hit.

You're completely wrong. A good returner needs to have lateral quickness. The defenders are coming full speed straight at you, and if you can't change direction you're getting leveled.

Yes. Look at his return average. It was mediocre. He only

had one TD. But as a receiver he was all-world.

I'm not knocking Sammy at all. He's the man. But he wasn't a great linebacker either.

No wonder those teams consistently SUCK!!!! That is by far and away Sammy's weakest area!!!!

Yes but, it wouldn't set well with me using my WR of Sammy Watkins talent on a punt/kick return with the entire cover team trying to get an opportunity to just TEE off on him with a blind side tackle. In my mind, I see it just to big of a risk of getting him a career or season ending injury. There will be plenty of chances for him to score without the entire punt/kick coverage team out to crush him. Its mind boggling to say the least for any coach to risk using him in that way.

I totally agree with AllOrange - Watkins is NOT a great return man - he runs too straight IMO. And you should NEVER risk him for that role. He had ONE great return against Maryland, and that's it. Forget that nonsense unless you want to totally waste a great talent. STUPID IDEA OF THE YEAR right here.
