What animal bites someone and never lets go?

Nov 10, 2020, 12:19 PM

Based on observation, I nominate the ferret. Friends of ours brought their pet ferret out for guests to admire. They handed it to my husband, and he unwisely accepted.

Little Frank promptly chomped down on the fleshy area between my husband's thumb and index finger, and wouldn't let go. The owner finally pried his jaws apart, but the ferret was not happy.

To confirm that this was not just a rare psychopathic ferret, I looked it up. Apparently it would be classified as a problem ferret, but the "latching on" happens enough that there are helpful instructions to follow if it ever happens to you:

If you are the recipient of a latch-on bite, and you can’t get the ferret to let go, don’t yell or use force because fear will make the ferret clamp down harder. Instead, cover the ferret’s nostrils with the thumb and forefinger of your free hand -- the ferret may let go to breathe. As a final resort, run the ferret’s face under water. It is unlikely you can force the ferret’s jaws apart without causing some damage to the ferret.

given the likelihood of an encounter of this kind, you can seize control of the situation before someone pulls out a ball peen hammer.
