Nov 2, 2018, 9:38 AM

Broski is telling me that this is a great deal. Thoughts?

Nov 2, 2018, 9:47 AM

So what are u supposed to do? Bring a trailer and then have 20 guys pick up said boat and load it onto the other trailer.

Why da f wouldn’t he just include the trailer in the price?

Actually, I'm in luck.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:06 AM

I haven't checked that all of these waters are navigable, but my tentative plans are to use existing waterways to drive the boat home.

Start: Charleston
Cooper River > Lake Moutlrie > Lake Marion > Congaree River > Saluda River > 12 Mile Creek > 14 Mile Creek > Dig a canal for the last few miles

Or

Take the Saluda all the way to the Lake Murray ###, and call in a favor from SCE&G to shut down a turbine and let me through into the lake. From there, I can get to an un-named creek that runs behind my house.

Finish: Adidas Plantation

Nov 2, 2018, 10:01 AM

grand at least so take that into account.

Personally, I Don't like dual console boats and their resale is not as high as some other types of boats, but that's just me.

It's a nice boat judging from the pics, but i would definitely have the motor looked at before you make a deal.

DC are the SUV's of boats.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:01 AM

They do everything, and tend to be drier than CC's.

FWIW.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:05 AM

I had a 20 Grady DC a few years back and it was a great boat. Spent a lot of time at Kiawah and near shore reef fishing in it.

No, tmitchell27 is exactly right.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:09 AM

If you're planning on using a boat mostly for fishing, you ALWAYS want to go with a trawler.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:01 AM

EW makes a good boat, but it is 16 years old. Plus no trailer? That's another $2k (used) or $4k (new). That year Yamaha was carbureted, and they have their own sets of problems. It's also a heavy boat, and might be a tad under powered.

Hard pass at $14K. Buy at $8k-9K.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Could be. There should be no doubt about the hull,

Nov 2, 2018, 10:03 AM

Edgewater is one of the top end builders like a Grady or Pursuit or such. I'm guessing the Yamaha is the original power to the boat? Only suspicious thing to me would be why only 200hrs? Engines that don't get used much tend to break often, but if the dude has kept it serviced, he'll have the records.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On second thought, yeah, I might be inclined to agree

Nov 2, 2018, 10:19 AM

with Ineligible U on price, decent trailers are $. Motor would give me greater pause, not sure how well you can maintain it if you never use it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ethanol fuel.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:25 AM

That's the biggest problem for a boat that doesn't get used much. Most folks won't pony up the extra .20/gal to buy non ethanol gas, and if it sits for more than about 60-90 days, its fscked.

None of the snake oil treatments like Sta-bil or Startron can fix the chemical make up of gas laced ethanol and its propensity to wick moisture from the air. And once it phase separates and turns into a half mixture of stale gas and water, it just makes a mess of everything--especially carburetors and low pressure fuel pumps.

The carbs on those engines had issues even without adding ethanol gas to them as well. Once they became fuel injected, they were pretty much bulletproof (without the ethanol gas).

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, even without the ethanol fuel, that little usage

Nov 2, 2018, 11:04 AM

is a nightmare on every housing/fitting, anything non-metallic on that motor. extra $$$ to replace it all and run it in good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The only thing with Whalers is the wood.

Nov 2, 2018, 10:34 AM [ in reply to I think I'd go with this one over that one ]

They put plywood in them, and they don't even use marine plywood, at least they didn't. They say they are encapsulated in foam, but one leaking screw hole from a transducer mount and its just a matter of time before the rot sets in.

That EW is a solid hill, and warrantied for life. No wood construction, and they are well built boats. They are "big" for their size, kind of like the Grady 180 is a big boat for 18'. That boat needs a 150 HP for best performance, but a 115 would push it to about 35 mph or so.

True story on an EW that used to sit in my storage hole down here: Some dude had an older EW 175 CC that he quit paying storage rent on, so the storage place auctioned it off. Somehow the boat got a crack in it after sitting for so long (probably a bad trailer) and a tree grew up from inside the boat. Storage place woman told me that the guy who bought the boat for almost nothing took it back to EW, and they gave him a brand new hull. He sold the old motor that he had on the old hull, and put a new engine on the new hull. He basically got a new EW 175 CC for a steal.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably hasn't been used real hard if it's only been

Nov 2, 2018, 10:40 AM

a freshwater boat. I don't think he's going to want to go through a repower, which is ultimately what that Edgewater is going to need.

2002 motor with 200 something hours is something I would not want.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Especially with carburetors

Nov 2, 2018, 10:45 AM

Might as well get all three replaced, because a rebuild won't fix'em.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree w/ everyone else you don't want a 16 year old yammy

Nov 2, 2018, 10:47 AM

with only 200 hours. PASS. guaranteed to not have been serviced by the book.
