Why not? I agree though that it is odd to apologize for something where nobody alive had anything to do with it. I still think it is good to recognize it anyway. It don't see any harm.

No, when something is done that makes black people uncomfortable, they're told to deal with it. Or they're told that their experience simply isn't true.

What is the purpose of Charleston apologizing for it?

Charleston is a collection of inanimate objects. It was not alive or sentient during slavery. Neither were any relatives of any of its inhabitants.
So what/who is exactly is doing the apology? The city council? The mayor? The citizens? Is it an apology on behalf of white people, or does it include black people? Should all contributors to slavery apologize? Are cities that apologize less guilty or less racist than cities who do not? What's the goal? What does it accomplish? Who does it help?
It seems so completely ridiculous that it is hard for me to extract any meaning of the gesture other than as an irrational compensation for irrational political correctness.

It's like when I apologize to my wife just to shut her up. I don't necessarily mean it, but it shuts her up long enough for me to get on with my life.
