No. 3 Clemson Rolls By Wake Forest 82-24
NY Times / AP
Published: November 1, 1981

CLEMSON, S.C., Oct. 31— Chuck McSwain ran for 90 yards and three touchdowns today as unbeaten Clemson defeated Wake Forest, 82-24. Clemson won its eighth game and scored more points than any other team in Atlantic Coast Conference history; the previous record was set in 1954 when Maryland beat Missouri, 74-13.

Clemson scored on all but two possessions, and had 49 points by Halftime. The Tigers set a team record for total offense, gaining more than 750 yards. Cliff Austin scored two of Clemson's touchdowns, on runs of 4 and 3 yards. Clemson's longest scoring effort came on the first play of second half, when the quarterback Homer Jordan connected with Perry Tuttle for a 75-yard touchdown. Later, Tuttle caught another touchdown pass from Jordan, this one a 25-yarder.

Wake Forest (3-6) scored on passes of 17 and 5 yards from Gary Schofield to Kenny Duckett, a 1-yard run by Carlos Cunningham and a 22-yard field goal by Phil Denfeld.

Classy mascot. He also allowed himself to be crowd surfed up the stands. I'll never forget it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I remember a newspaper article after the game...

Oct 31, 2019, 8:34 AM

stating that Wake Forest had people masquerading as a defensive unit for Halloween. I got a good chuckle out of that.

I also remember being in the upper deck as a freshman, chanting "100, 100, 100". Think it was Parents day and we had players who had barely stepped on the field, if at all, scoring touchdowns. It was a fun game for a blowout.

The Tiger was wore out doing all the pushups and the Demon Deacon mascot came over to help out. LOL

Was there as a HS senior. Lived in Alabama and tore ligaments and separated my left shoulder the night before in a football game. Had a harness on and hopped up on codeine and sat in the upper deck. Only had one arm to hold the rail and keep my balance. Thought for sure I was going to tumble down into the lower deck. 82 points made it worth the trip.

Was a crazy day, everybody played, and just about everybody scored. Most of us were more interested in watching the tiger do pushups than the game.

the Tigers had recruited a highly regarded receiver from Greensboro that year and he got a chance to play late in this game. As I recall he was in for one play and caught a very long pass for a touchdown in the final minutes. I dont believe he ever played another snap at Clemson. Anyone remember this?

Perhaps it was Crawford. I remember him playing in other games. He was a good player for the Tigers back in the day.

I’ll have to do some research on this topic. To long ago for my pea brain.
