My rating system for when I am on the CFP committee
Nov 29, 2016, 11:01 AM

Just in case I am asked to serve on the CFP committee, here is a system I would use in order to help me navigate cases like the Big 10 this year:
1) Overall season (taking into account regular season wins and loses): 4 points 2) Conference Championship: 3 points 3) Head to Head results: 3 points 4) Eye test: 3 points
OSU against Penn State (assuming PSU wins Big 10): OSU: 1) 3 points 2) 0 points 3) 0 points 4) 2 points = 5 points PSU: 1) 2 points 2) 3 points 3) 3 points 4) 1 point = 9 points If it must be one or the other, I would place Penn State
OSU against Wisconsin (assuming Wisconsin wins Big 10) OSU: 1) 3 points 2) 0 points 3) 3 points 4) 2 points = 8 points WIS: 1) 2 points 2) 3 points 3) 0 points 4) 2 points = 7 points If it must be one or the other, I would place Wisconsin
Thank you very much and have a grrrreat day

You would place Wisconsin over OSU?

Your metric states OSU beats Wis. 8 to 7.
Maybe you just misstated, because you would prefer Wisc. over OSU. (maybe ?)
I would agree that the Big10 champ should get in over someone not in the championship game.
The only way 2 teams get in is if they are from the same conference and lost a close head to head match up (all else being stellar).
So 1)Alabama, 2)Clemson, 3)Wisconson/Penn State and ...
... would they really not include 11-1 Washington (weak schedule) as PAC12 champ vs 11-1 OSU (tough schedule) not Big 10 champ.
Dunno. But the winner of the BTCG should be in. It is only a question if Washington can hang on or not.

To your question...

my system was simply to solve issues between close teams such as a 2 team from same conference scenario like Big 10 issue. In other words, if Bama, Clemson and Washington are in...how to decide on Big 10.
I don't like OSU, PSU or Wisconsin, so no bias in that regards. I simply determined my own metrics based on four significnat categories and then added them up. Just interesting to see that in the case of Penn State or OSU, PSU would get in but if up against Wisconsin, OSU would.
The strengths of this are: the Big 10 championship helped both PSU and Wisconsin, but does not trump head to head considerations and overall regular season results and the "eye test" that many put a lot of stock in. Head to head is important (that's why we play it on the field). But no one category carries ultimate weight. So if VT wins the ACCCG, that does not trump their regular season losses and eye test on the season

My numbers for overall season: 0 losses = 4 points; 1 loss = 3 points; 2 losses = 1-2 points depending on losses and wins on seasons (Michigan would get a 2 while Oklahoma a 1)
Points for eye test: Bama would be a 3; Clemson a 2; Penn State a 1
Points for championship and head to head are all or nothing

Reread the op. OSU has a higher point total but you gave the nod to Wisc. Apparently, it's not that easy to pick the four teams lol

But you are assuming osu and psu are even compared head to head. PSU has one more loss than OSU and to an unranked team. The committee chair last week mentioned they do not consider penn and osu on the same level. Conference championships as mentioned on the show will be used to determine between two close teams; the committee said they aren't considered close. Does no one watch the interview at the end of the show with the chairman?

Note that in my perfect system (; the eye test gives OSU a higher rating as does overall season...however, PSU gets the nod b/c of the weight of winning both Head to Head and the Conf. Championship. I am pretty sure the committee will adopt this system once I get a hold of them

That is what I meant. Just not what I wrote. So in my new rating system for TN posts...in the category of post accuracy, I would give myself self 2 points out of 4.
