We will NEVER sign the #1 recruit in SC again

May 31, 2013, 10:20 AM

unless that title is given another way.

Here's the rub....

The #1 player in SC (Mr. Football) is awarded by an association of car dealers. Guess who the president of that association is...
That's right. It's the big Chrysler dealer in Columbia who is a big wig in the Gamecock Club. He's the guy that supplies all of the cars to the likes of DooDoo and company.
So when a kid signs with Clemson, he automatically gets bumped from consideration.

Now I'll hear Neil "Daddy's Boy" Lourie and Joel "Name Dropper" Shaw tell me I'm wrong.

Re: We will NEVER sign the #1 recruit in SC again

May 31, 2013, 10:26 AM

I saw a commercial for Bradshaw Cadillac (Greer) this week with Marcus Lattimore in the commercial. Hmmmm? I don't drive Cadillac anyway, but I won't buy from Bradshaw. I'm pretty darn sure there's a deeper connection there. Even my wife, who is not really a sports fan, noticed that this appeared odd.

Maybe because he's an icon in SC....maybe he's a professional football player now racking up endorsements...maybe that has something to do with it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wll since he's from that area

May 31, 2013, 10:34 AM

I'd expect him to be used in a lot of commercials.

That's pretty typical and not unusual at all.

Guess who was runner up this year?

May 31, 2013, 10:29 AM

Ben Boulware...he was the front runner...until....you guessed it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Guess who was runner up this year?

May 31, 2013, 10:36 AM

I thought it was the other way around. Don't remember hearing all that much about Boulware until late in the season and after the all-star games when his stock rose sharply.

At any rate, the current Mr. Football in SC signed with UGA and not SCAR didn't he?

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, and Tramel Terry wasn't the # 1 ranked player in the

May 31, 2013, 10:42 AM

state either.

The OP stated that as if the # 1 ranked player is Mr. Football. That's not true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yes, and Tramel Terry wasn't the # 1 ranked player

Jun 1, 2013, 5:10 PM

Well, if that be the case, then Clemson DID sign the #1 player in the state.

Boulware was not "Mr. Football", but by the time all the dust had settled, he was widely (if not universally) recognized as the top player in the state.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't care

Jun 2, 2013, 4:44 PM

I was going by rivals- not opinion of posters

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Meh, we'll just have to settle for the #1 player out of GA

May 31, 2013, 10:31 AM

every year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, not buying the conspiracy theories

May 31, 2013, 10:31 AM

We'll sign the #1 recruit in the state when the #1 recruit in the state wants to go to Clemson and Clemson really wants whoever is the #1 recruit in the state. Until then, I'm happy getting other good SC recruits in addition to elite guys from bigger states like NC, GA, and FL. Let USuCk get the #1 guy in the state all they want, as long as they aren't also getting half of the top ten players from more talent rich surrounding states.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We will NEVER sign the #1 recruit in SC again

May 31, 2013, 10:36 AM

I don't equate Mr. Football to the #1 player, necessarily.

I look at Rivals or 247...that's the #1 I consider to be legit. Mr. Football is an award for 1 season, right? As opposed to the body of work combined with the next level projection.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The # 1 player and Mr Football are two different things

May 31, 2013, 10:41 AM

(where do people come up with these conspiracy things anyway).

The #1 player? From Rivals or where?

Mr. Football isn't necessarily the #1 ranked player per recruiting services.

Stephen Gilmore was Mr. Football in South Carolina- but was ranked the #2 player in the state per Rivals.

Richard Mounce was Mr. Football in 2007. I don't recall him being ranked #1 in the state.

Malcomb Long was Mr. Football in 2006. He wasn't the # 1 recruit in South Carolina either.

Prince Miller was Mr. Football in 2005. he was the #6 ranked recruit in the state by Rivals.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't Richard Mounce sign with Clemson for baseball?

May 31, 2013, 11:18 AM

I didn't dream that up did I?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1) It's not awarded by the car dealers. The award last year was sponsored by the Moore Ortho Clinic in Columbia.

The award is presented at the SCADA (South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association) North-South Game.

#1, or Mr Football?

Not trying to nit-pick, but one is for a season and the other for a career and potential.

May 31, 2013, 11:55 AM

Clemson fan? Then when he takes over we'll have a lock on the # 1 player.

Seriously, I think your reasoning is wrong as the president of this group doesn't have the only vote.

Re: Re: We will NEVER sign the #1 recruit in SC again

May 31, 2013, 12:08 PM

I know the Bradshaw's personally and you are making an incorrect assumption if you think there is something deeper there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We might get one eventually

May 31, 2013, 12:14 PM

it'd have to be a player who's far and away #1 as far as the national services are concerned and it would be too obvious what they're doing if they pick someone else.

That or the current president of that association leaves office

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who cares? I'll take the best players no matter where they.

Re: We will NEVER sign the #1 recruit in SC again

Jun 1, 2013, 7:41 PM

Clemson has the #7, #18, #19, #24, & #29 recruits out of Ga this year. That's pretty good but far from all the elite recruits from Ga.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good spin job.

Jun 1, 2013, 9:46 PM

I'd like to know the only recruiting website you used for that.

Going by Rival's rankings we have the #2, 4, 5, 8, and 13 players.

That's a good chunk of the top recruits from Georgia and include the #1 QB, WR, and TE. As well as the #2 LB and RB.

Agains just based on Rivals.

According to ESPN we have the #1, 9, 14, 15, and 23. That doesn't look as good as the Rival's rankings but we still have a good amount of the elite talent at the top of the GA rankings.
