Great train wreck of Clemson

Apr 9, 2015, 5:08 AM

I grew up in the Clemson area and I never heard of this before...

Oh....I thought this was another post about the baseball

LOL....Good morning, friend and neighbor. So did I, and

although I arrived at CU as a frosh in August 1965, I don't recall news about that wreck.

Then again, one of the only things I remember about that arrival was an upperclassman yelling for me to follow him for my "rat" introduction, which meant the infamous haircut. My Dad laughed, then drove off.

LOL, I came to Clemson in 1957 and had a similar introduction as you, hartins. The fellas from my home town that were already at Clemson made me pay them a $1 for the haircut.

Odd thing was that I had never set a foot on the campus

until I arrived and knew very little about rat season other than what a neighbor's son (a 1955 grad) told me.

When I walked into my top floor, tin can dorm room, the heat was stifling, although I remember thinking, "Well, this is about like being home," because our house wasn't air conditioned either.

Unlike some friends I didn't mind rat season, as I learned how to avoid much of it other than the dining hall cheering, shoe shining and occasional errand to Dan's. lol

I remember the train wreck. I think it was my soph year. Railcars were scattered all along the lake on the other side of the bridge. A rumor spread across campus that the train was loaded with liquor, and boys went over there by the hundreds. They came back cursing and saying that the train was loaded with toilet paper.

I also remember the school burning one night and the Methodist Church the next night. Arson was suspected, and it was a scary time. That was just before Christmas 1964, and students were hired to patrol all of the buildings on campus throughout the nights. There were no more fires, and I never heard if the fires were determined to be arson.
