If he gets a medical redshirt he has 2 years of eligibility left.

Honestly He should just red shirt this happened in the first game. I know if a freshman plays less then 10% of the games in the first part of the season he can red shirt. I don't have any clue if the same is true for upper classman.

If he just can't get medical clearance to safely play again

this year that's 100% the right move and he will almost certainly have the request granted. However, if is cleared to play and there aren't any concerns about his health going forward, and we are still undefeated when that happens, bring him back! I don't care if it's for 2 or 3 games.
