Any advice on living in St. Louis?

Jan 22, 2016, 7:29 PM

I'll be living there for a few months for work (unless I fail some seriously hard exams and get fired).

If any, there probably aren't many on this board that have lived there but I'm a hick from the sticks of Pickens County. I need all the help I can get.

Depending on where you're working, West County or St. Charles are the most affordable. If you're working downtown, the Shaw area of South St. Louis is a really cool place to live. Get ready for a big adjustment on cost of living. You ain't in Pickens no more.

Great restaurants in the Soulard area (try John D. McGurk's -- great Irish pub) and the Central West End (Dressel's is a cool pub there). The Loop is good for some night life, if you're into that as well.

I loved my time there, though I'm a small town guy myself. I left as a Cards fan, but my blood still runs orange.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lived there as well

Jan 22, 2016, 10:08 PM

Try Clayton or off the Hill. Lot of guy rehabs with garages. Close to downtown and forest park.

West county is nice but a haul to get to fun stuff like central west end (another great area) or delmar or soulard. Go to Johnnys. :)

Every area can be checkerboard. Rich areas then lowest of lows.

Hire a realtor there and they will steer you nicely.

I lived off kingshighway and oleatha.

Good luck!

O'fallon, IL

Jan 22, 2016, 10:22 PM

I was stationed at Scott AFB for 2 years. look at living in O'Fallon, IL, it is in the suburbs of St Louis. Great small town with easy access to St Louis. When I left they were in process of establishing a train terminal in the area, much like you find in New York City, would not have to deal with the traffic if the stops are close to where you will work. Good Luck

This is VERY GOOD advice. My entire Family are huge Cardinal Fans and go up every year to watch a weekend series.

We will always stay in O'Fallon from now on. Very nice community, we really enjoyed going to the Horse racing, very inexpensive Family night out.

Only 15 miles to Busch Stadium in the middle of St. Louis from O'Fallon. Beautiful Farm Country all around that area.

STAY AWAY FROM EAST St. Louis and Ferguson.

Go see the Cards while you are there, 40,000 fans EVERY game.

Re: O'fallon, IL

Jan 23, 2016, 9:23 AM [ in reply to O'fallon, IL ]

Good call on O'Fallon...
Since Charleston AFB is an AMC wing (MAC) and Scott AFB is HQ AMC (near O'Fallon), there is a lot of movement of people between the two. Given that you cannot live in SC without becoming either somewhat of a Tiger or Gamecock fan, I would say that the O'Fallon area will have the highest concentration of Clemson fans to hang with on Saturdays in the fall. That is how I became a lifelong Clemson fan...and Cardinal fan...and now Cowboy fan. Anyway, I lived in O'Fallon for 6 years as a kid, and it is a nice and safe place to live and not far from St Louis.

Re: Any advice on living in St. Louis?

Jan 23, 2016, 1:48 AM

I was born, raised and have lived in St. Louis my whole life. I'm a Clemson fan because my daughter took a visit during her Jr. year in high school and fell in love, as did I. I'm a bit older and have always lived out in St. Louis county. Plenty of nice places to live in the County as well as St. Charles County which is further out and more affordable. There are also options on in Illinois, but you will have traffic over the bridges (same for St. Charles). Where you work will help dictate where you live. Like any urban environments (ex., Atlanta) there are good areas and not so good areas (north side), and some mixed. If you live in a mixed area, life can be entertaining.

St. Louis does not have as many young professionals moving into the area as some other cities, so many your age will already have their social circles established and they may not be as open to making new friends as you might find in other, more growing cities.

St. Louis has a lot to offer for entertainment (except the NFL). I'm not too up on the bar scene, but the Delmar Loop and Central West End are young, hip, urban environments. And yes, you do need to go to a Cards game (and Ted Drewes afterward) as well as the City Museum, Science Center, Art Museum, Brewery Tour, the Arch (temporarily closed for renovations), a Blues Hockey game (even if you're not a hockey fan, attending a NHL game is amazing) Forest Park, Zoo, Muny, Fox Theater and there are several casinos in the area if you're into that sort of thing.

Further away from St. Louis there are plenty of outdoor activities including Six Flags, the Lake of The Ozarks and Table Rock Lake, St. Francis Mtns., Meramec Caverns, Wineries, Johnson Shut-Ins, Elephant Rocks, Hawn State Park, floating on the Current, Huzzah, Black rivers, and many other outdoor recreational opportunities.

T-Mail me with questions and I'll share what I know.

Re: Any advice on living in St. Louis? FINALLY!

Jan 23, 2016, 7:25 AM

Finally, someone mentions Ted Drewes...That is a MUST. When I was there, there were two locations, but I left there in the early '90s...so that could be different. I think the schedule was like Memorial Day to Labor Day, for the best Frozen Custard in world. Don't be skeered of the lines, they move pretty quickly.
http://teddrewes.com/
Other areas, I'm familiar with are part of West County; Manchester, Ballwin, Ellisville, and Chesterfield.
As far as things to do, the fall festivals are great..a LOT of German influence just west of St Louis.
The town of Washington, MO. My wife managed a 9-room Bed and Breakfast there. It sat on the Missouri riverfront with the train tracks between the street and the river. She had guests that came in by Amtrak train, by the river, and bicycle..one of note had bicycled from Ohio...and of course by the boring car. :) Many of the small communities out in that area do the Germanfest..it's big. Fresh apple cider, etc.
UPscale areas in the central area near Clayton, are the Communities of Frontenac, and Ladue.
It would be helpful to have a general work location to make more appropriate recommendations.
Also, Busch Wildlife, and Purina Farms west/northwest of St Louis are nice. You definitely want to see Union Station. When I was there, Union Station had a special Ice Cream event, that you payed a flat fee, and it was an all you can eat ice cream social, with the proceeds going to Childrens'Hospital and similar. Don't know whether they are still doing that..but the kids could climb around on the steam locomotives, etc. Also, Busch farms where you could see the Clydesdale horses...And July 4th fireworks under the Arch, with fireworks shot from the barges... I lived there for 13 years, that's where I met my wife, who was born and raised there. We were transferred to Texas, as I mentioned in early 90's.
I second the motion on visiting Elephant Rocks, amazing. Branson, if memory serves correctly is about 5 hours away, and that area is awesome in the fall, with lot's of activities.
Hope all goes well for you!
GO TIGERS!!!

I know a great place in East St. Louis, IL. That's right, a GREAT place in E St. Louis.

I spent a week there in the summer clearing a field and building dugouts for a baseball field for the Christian Activity Center - right in the middle of all of the "bad" stuff. The guy who runs the place, Chet Cantrel, is a very interesting guy: a visionary, a hard worker, highly educated, from NC... He has poured his life into the kids that no one else gives two craps about. The guy lives the gospel. My recommendation is to visit there if you are so inclined... 506 N 6th St, East St. Louis, IL. http://www.cacesl.org/. I will go back.

Went to auctioneer school there. Stay out of East St. Louis! Ask locals in the other side, west. If you like fishing on your breaks and meet someone with a boat, drive down to Lake of the Ozarks. Lots of docks and great fishing! God bless!
