I had the 4 door and the reason I sold it was because my kid was starting to drive and didn't want them driving something with that many miles.

Oil change is the life of any engine, and I'm not talking about waiting for the idiot light to come telling some people to do their maintenance. Even with the new oils they are coming out with, no more than 5k before servicing their oil and filter, air filters are also a must replace along with your oil and oil filter changes. I'm not recommending anyone to change their oil every thousand miles, I'm just saying that if they did, it would be cheaper than replacing an engine, and that is what will happen if someone doesn't change their oil, oil filter and air filters at least every 4 to 5 thousand mile. I'm old school, and I do it all every 3,500 miles. Being an X auto/diesel technician, I've learned that 3,500 mile service to the engine, ensures that the engine will last as long as the rest of the vehicle in most cases. Just saying that it's not necessary the vehicle brand that you own that makes them last, it's mostly how you service them that makes them last. Just as many people that own Chevy, Ford, or who ever the auto maker was, they can also brag about how many miles they have gotten from their vehicle as any other as long as they have done proper maintenance to their vehicle. All combustible engines are made from the same basics, and they all will last when taken good care of. And I can promise that I have cleaned dried up grease from under my finger nails from about all of them. Take good care of them, and 95% of the time, they will ride you a long ways for a long time.

The problem with Tacomas is...
Jun 26, 2017, 12:30 PM
[ in reply to Toyota Tacoma, siriously . . . ] |

I LOVE Tacomas, best mid sized truck on the market by far, and easily my favorite truck made today but...
1. If you buy a brand new one (2016, 2017 models), you will be plagued with transmission, transfer case, and axle leak recalls.
2. New, basic, 4 door 4x4 Tacomas cost as much as a mid range F-150 with some options, which is crazy expensive for a light duty truck.
3. Any used Tacoma you find with mid-mileage (less than 100k miles) is going to have a price tag equivalent to that of a brand new one. Apparetly the "law" of immediate depreciation on a new car doesnt apply to these trucks.
4. Any used Tacoma that is in a decent price range, no matter the year, will typically have a description that reads something like "Yeah, this truck is awesome. Its a 2001, its got 300,000 miles on it, been in a fender bender, and has an irregular/unknown maintenance schedule. Asking price: $18,000". Seriously, you'll see Tacomas anywhere from 6-20 years old with 250,000+ miles on them going for $15,000+. Its stupid.
And that is why I cant justify buying a Tacoma. I bought a 4runner instead. Literally the same vehicle, but without a bed. I got a used 2002 4runner SR5 Sport 4x4 with a locking differential and the rare "tall" TRD offroad suspension, full leather interior, digital temp controls, "big brake" upgrade from the factory, 1 owner, 110,000 miles on the odo, full maintenance records from the dealership (oil every 3k, transmission/4wd every 25k, full service on everything), and drives like its brand new for less than half of what a basic 2002 4x4 Tacoma with 280,000 miles cost.
The Colorado/Canyon is a great alternative for the money, AND the new ones are outperforming the Tacomas in mileage testing, towing ability, reliability, and a few other areas.

I have a 2004 Colorado Z71 4x4 I5 220HP and pulled a boat many times. Mine is a crewcab so no golf cart. I also have a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport which has 278HP crew cab pretty sure no golf car too (I got an EZGO RXV). Golf cart is gonna need a full size truck.

I had a GMC canyon off road with the Z-71 package, 5 cylinder 220 HP engine. I use it to tow an enclosed motor cycle trailer with my Harley inside, and it done great. Going to Daytona bike week, there and back, I set the cruise at 80, and it held it with no problem at all. The dislike that I had with the vehicle was it used up a lot of gas under normal use. I got like only 20 mile to the gallon with daily driving. But, for a little truck, it was solid as a rock. I put 151 k on it, and it was never in a shop for repairs. I did all the normal maintenance like changing oil/filter and air filters every 3,500 miles, and I changed the front brake pads once. It was a great little truck for the needs that I had for a truck, I hope this helps ya.

New to the site. The Colorado is great. I have a friend who bought a 2016. We can tow almost anything in it. It should fit a golf cart in the back no problem at all. It's a fun pickup to drive as well!!!

Lennon-McCartney, you only need to worry about the Colorado package on any truck you use for hauling or towing. If you're going with the Colorado or the Canyon, you will need the Z71 towing package, it's a must for either in the small trucks being used for towing or hauling, end of story!!! They have bigger tires and a stronger more durable heavy suspension!!!

Bigger diameter tires? Wouldn't that make towing more difficult?

Tires with right grip and load range wouldn't make a difference period.
I have two one crew cab and one regular cab F-250 4x4 and they go forever and both will tow 20,000 lbs plus but ones rated for 19,600 and the other for 20,600. I mainly use mine for towing horse trailers 3 or 5 horse with living quarters. Both are 2002 with less than 150k.

No, not when the gear ratio was set up for the taller tire. What one comes with from the factory, as original equipment, that means that it was designed to work well just as you get it. Now you can modify it to work better. The factory will always try and keep the cost down so that they can sell them. The owner can always modify to make them ever better for their application that they actually need it to do.

I would select the Canyon myself. When I was searching for a truck, that's what I wanted, but I could never get the price in my range. I went with the Nissan Frontier SL with all the options except 4wd. You need to check out the bed sizes if you're planning to put a cart in the bed. The Canyon/Colorado beds are short unless you want to spend a lot of $$$. For what you want, a new truck is going to be $40+ IMO. Tacomas are awesome looking, but have less HP than you might need, and they are the priciest of every truck. Toyota loves their trucks. I couldn't find anything close to the price I wanted to pay in the Tacoma. Way too pricey for me.
So - Canyon with 6' bed and towing package is my recommendation. It's gonna cost ya' though. But hey - you guys are rich - right?

No you can not fit golf cart in bed- tire wells get in the way. I recently debated same thing, ended up going with full size sierra.

and will get rid of my little fifteen foot boston whaler , so i then needed a truck to tow the boat from time to time ...but then i decided to get a four wheel drive truck so i could use it for an additional tow vehicle to tow behind our RV ( my wife has a ford c-max hybrid subcompact that is also our tow vehicle, or toad , as they are sometimes called) AND maybe also put my small golf cart in the pickup to take with us on some camping trips and game weekends...trying to kill three birds with one stone here ....lol

Don't have the Colorado or canyon but I do have a 2015 GMC Sierra Z71 4x4. It has stock tires on it and gets about 21 on the hwy and about 16-17 in town. I bought it with about 10,000 miles on it. Don't know if you were planning on buying a new Colorado or canyon but the sticker price for one well equipped is not far off from a new full size Sierra or Silverado. Some of the sticker prices that I have seen on the loaded versions of the canyon is around $46k. A lot for a small truck. Im sure they are good vehicles though and would serve your purpose. Just something to think about...
