Has this country lost its collective minds???

Yes and no. It's most likely overkill, but

Mar 12, 2020, 6:07 PM

we don't have enough information or testing to really have an understanding of how bad this can and will be.

But, as I write this, it's 40 deaths. All this for 40 deaths seems extreme by any measure of fear.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We must understand that this is not being done because

Mar 12, 2020, 7:00 PM

of 40 deaths. This is being done to try to prevent that number from getting into the thousands, tens of thousands, and beyond.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Considering it's only 4,000 deaths world wide, tamp down your percieved estimates

Mar 12, 2020, 7:49 PM

Plus, I said that more testing is desperately needed. S. Korea is testing 100,000 people a day. Identify those that are infected. Quarantine them and the spread will be controlled as it is in S. Korea where the outbreak was far worse.

Well there’s the insensitive statement of the day “ only 4000 deaths “ You would’ve made a good guard at Auschwitz

Re: Considering it's only 4,000 deaths world wide, tamp down your percieved estimates

Mar 12, 2020, 8:14 PM

4000 deaths around the world in 2 months is not a large number.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a false equivalence.... 150,000 people die every day

Mar 13, 2020, 9:08 AM [ in reply to Re: Considering it's only 4,000 deaths world wide, tamp down your percieved estimates ]

Unfortunately, we cannot save everyone. Some things are simply out of our control. That doesn't equate to the willful murder of millions of people that the Nazis committed.

We shut the country down every flu season to cap at approximately 10,000+ deaths so it only makes sense.

The majority of the world population does not have the intellect to see past the scare words. You won't hear the media talk about sample sizes or the ages of those who succumb to it, because it deflates the fear-factor.

I am not sanctimonious, I simply do NOT care. I am completely apathetic to your situation. Them media has gotten so good at dialing in hysteria and the sheep just follow it. To hell witht he facts, let's focus on the worst buzz words that will trigger people. It's true for EVERYTHING! Not just this strain of the flu!

If you don't see that, drink some bleach, boil your iPhone and everything will be fine.

one thing that is being overlooked is that the vast majority of people who are succumbing to the virus are not just old but they are old and feeble, old and frail and they have serious, and I repeat, serious pre-existing medical conditions. So we're shutting the country down to save 80 year olds with the flu, pneumonia, and or cancer, etc.

From what I've seen and heard, the opposite. Seems the 20-30 somethings are telling us old farts that they should be able to go to a basketball game and deal with their own consequences, thank you very much.

Absolutey. The usual suspects are hysterical, but not everybody.

It's like any other virus, and it's situational. But, the politicizing of it, the news cycle, and the fact that we dont have a vaccine contributes to panic. Not to mention because nobody wants to get sued everything is being cancelled.

All in all, our country is definitely overreacting.

This is a case of unsavoury politicians not letting a crisis go to waste, in this case it's actually not a crisis. They've merely generated the belief in some that it's a crisis.

yes, they have to some extent

Mar 12, 2020, 6:48 PM

all of my plants in china are back up and running and they - by far - had the worst of it.

my issue is the end game here. what will change in a week, month, year? do we wait around until a cure for the bad flu is found? I get it - but lets say we go a month and there are still pockets in the world that have this. you cant stop them from coming to the USA. Heck the democrats wont let us control the border. what is to say - people from that pocket - go thru mexico? or go from the pocket to a country that is not banned and then comes here?
the flu has been around for decades - yet nothing ever changed. we did not stop the world.

prudent choices - but you have to live.

For 2 years Republicans had both House and Senate. They didn't want the wall. Only crazy people want to waste money on a wall. Walls are for 2,000 years ago. The world changes. Quit talking about stupid stuff like a wall. If Trump wouldn't have obliterated the CDC budget and eliminated the Obama plans for pandemic responses , we wouldn't be in this mess. The president is unfit for office and has failed the American people.

I try to empathize with the decision makers. It’s a no-win situation. Perceived overreaction, they get criticized. Perceived under reaction, they get criticized. React somewhere between the two, get criticized for not doing one or the other. It’s an unprecedented, at least in my lifetime, situation. Go Tigers!

Actually, I’m speaking more specifically about those responsible for postponing professional and amateur sports seasons. And those canceling major tennis tournaments in South Carolina. And those discussing the possibility of canceling a certain major run across a big bridge in Charleston. Go Tigers!

There's definitely a bit of hysteria, but not w/o reason

Mar 12, 2020, 9:13 PM

I think the number of cancellations, etc are going a little overboard but at the same time I'd prefer they go overboard and nip this in the bud, rather than not take it seriously and have it turn into a serious problem. Currently there's not nearly enough testing resources going around, but once we get them I'm sure we'll see that the number of people in the US with the virus is actually much, much higher than currently recorded. However, I think that could actually be a good thing because it'll show that the mortality rate isn't all that terrible. With that said, it has the potential to become very dangerous and it deserves to be taken very seriously.

Two talking points that I've seen here and elsewhere that are frustrating, in my opinion:

1. It's not that bad, China had a much worse outbreak than the USA and they're already seeing a reduction in cases.

Yes, that's currently true, but China had a terrible outbreak because they didn't take the disease seriously and then all of a sudden had an outbreak of 45,000 cases in two weeks. They slowed slowed the outbreak because they forcibly locked people inside their homes and wouldn't let them out. Only by depriving people of human rights were they able to stem their outbreak. I think it's a little ridiculous to look at them and say "See, it's nothing! Crisis over!" Americans should never have to be put in a situation like that.

2. Tons of people die of the flu every year and society doesn't freak out about it

Again, this is true, but it's also insane to compare this to a virus that's been common to our population since out great, great grandparents were around. What we know is the COVID-19 infections probably started sometime towards the end of November in a Chinese market, and has gone world wide in roughly 4 months. People are nervous about this because of the unknown. Currently the mortality rate is multiples higher than the flu, but far lower than past virus scares (ebola, h1n1, SARS, etc), but that could change. In 1918, the first wave of Spanish Influenza spread over the world with relatively minor results...actually, pretty similar to COVID-19. The only people who were dying were the elderly, aside from them most people were fine. However the virus mutated and when the second wave spread in the fall, at least 50,000,000 people died. This isn't to say that's going to happen here. It almost certainly won't for a number of reasons. However it should at least serve as a reminder to respect the danger something like this poses. Saying people shouldn't be concerned about this because there are lots of flu deaths is like saying we shouldn't be afraid to fly a jetpack because more people die in car accidents every year.

Measures are being taken to stop that spread before it starts. Cancelling sporting events & concerts, asking people to not go on flights unless it's necessary travel, etc. Surely these are annoyances, but it's better to be safe than sorry, in my opinion.

He was in close proximity to Brazil's president, who was just reported to have tested positive. The reaction has been extreme, but for one I don't think this is a drill.

Yes, for sure.

Mar 13, 2020, 11:32 AM

People panic too easily, and the media fans the flames of negativity.

However, the coronavirus should be taken seriously and I think the renewed emphasis on hand washing and hygiene, as well as canceling events and large gatherings, are smart moves.
