Does Brownell actually want to get Zion Williamson?

Mar 29, 2017, 11:11 PM

Because that would raise expectations. If we miss the tourney again next year people will say "get the #2 player and still can't get in the dance!" But without Zion there is no such attack.

Probably more comfortable to not sign him

Re: Does Brownell actually want to get Zion Williamson?

I sense the sarcasm. I want him to come to Clemson but the blue blood programs will be hard to beat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell absolutely wants Zion Williamson!

Mar 29, 2017, 11:17 PM

Your post makes no sense. Brownell absolutely want to win, and Zion Williamson on this team would increase those odds.

Or he can choose USC and get yelled at 24-7 --- or until the coach walks out of practice. I personally think this team got together after that and decided to win DESPITE coach martin.

Totally

Mar 29, 2017, 11:48 PM

They hate Martin I bet

There is not a single coach in college or NBA who recruits with that mentality. Every single currently employed coach in any sport ever is trying to win as many games as possible. How does Clemson do that? Get Zion.

As Frank Martin himself said, "fans used to sayI was a yelling, arrogant coach. Now that we're winning, they say I'm passionate'" . Does he have the coots pegged or what??

Coach on hotseat, fortunate to get another year,,,,,"I dont want more good players"??? let me get lesser players, and save my job?

How stupid are you?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure BBrownell even wants the bird in hand....

Mar 29, 2017, 11:42 PM

Let alone the bird in the bush.... he needs to get a recruiting primer from Dabo, not for what Dabo is doing now but for what he did to get us to the mountain top...
We can debate the talent of Sharon Wright Jr but it won't be a good look at all if usuck gets Jr and Williamson... Two schools that SW Sr. actually hates are usuck and uga but Frank Martin is making a personal pitch to Jr that has Sr concerned that Jr is giving them a legitimate look...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are we recruiting Sharone Wright Jr hard or do we have

Mar 30, 2017, 9:36 AM

someone else that we like?

Looks like South Carolina has his ear.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We were his second scholarship offer.

Mar 30, 2017, 1:28 PM

Of course we're trying to recruit him. Whether or not he is our top target for his position, who knows?

Mar 31, 2017, 4:11 AM

Any offer after the first doesn't get the respect of that first offer, they are all the same after that... but Any 4 Star in state legacy should be a TOP priority, especially if that recruit would be your best and highest ranked recruit. I can say with certainty that this one is slipping away unless Brownell flips the switch on the recruitment. He doesn't have to treat him like a prince, but he needs to stop thinking that Clemson basketball is a desired destination.

According to a reliable source, Brownell is not standing out in the crowd and isn't using the influence of his dad very well either...

Re: Does Brownell actually want to get Zion Williamson?

Mar 29, 2017, 11:52 PM

Just out of curiosity, is it possible for Brownell to land one of those "un-declared" players that I watched in tonight's HS All American game? That's all it takes is one to buy into a dream, then you sell results. It would be great to get Z.W. but is it even possible for him to snag one of those other guys on TV tonight? That would be really great. Chance He's making those pitches to those players?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well one of them was committed to Western Kentucky

Mar 30, 2017, 6:56 AM [ in reply to Re: Does Brownell actually want to get Zion Williamson? ]

If you make your pitch... The real question is this, is Brownell REALLY making the pitch?

Re: There's always a chance...

Mar 30, 2017, 8:55 AM

I hope not. We need our ace recruiter working on Zion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why do some of you continue to think

Mar 30, 2017, 9:25 AM [ in reply to There's always a chance... ]

that Brownell just doesn't try to recruit top players? He has gone after many of the top players in recent seasons, and unfortunately we have not quite gotten them. The notion that he doesn't try, or doesn't care, is ignorant.

Re: Why do some of you continue to think

Mar 30, 2017, 11:41 AM

Judge Brownell has said in an interview a few years ago that we cant recruit the top players. That's not even trying to. An ace recruiter like Dabo doesn't quit because it's a tough sell. If Brownell knows that he can't recruit well, hire assistants who can.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He didn't say that he doesn't try to get them though.

Mar 30, 2017, 1:24 PM

Brad has recruited plenty of top players, and as stated previously, we have lost many of them at the last minute to other programs with far more history than we have (UNC, etc.). A quick check of the guys we have recruited will show you that Brownell has made good efforts to land the 5 star recruits.

When he made that comment several years ago, he was right. Given our history and lack of administrative support, we couldn't sign top recruits. Because of Brownell's efforts in fundraising, we were able to build the new facilities which are already starting to pay dividends.

Good recruiting requires much more than being a good salesman. Dabo wouldn't have recruited nearly as well as he has if he didn't have the great facilities and administrative support which he has had. Brownell is just starting to get that, and it is no coincidence that his best recruiting class is the one for 2017.

Mar 31, 2017, 4:17 AM [ in reply to Why do some of you continue to think ]

It's ignorant I think that nothing needs to change in how recruiting gets done... If we want to compete in the top half of the conference, we need either a system or talent to do it, right now we have neither and that is strictly based on observation of results.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell was the first coach to offer Zion a scholarship.

Mar 30, 2017, 9:26 AM

But I'm sure he only did it because he was bored, and not because he wants to sign good players and be successful.

I'm sure there has been some sarcasm in the Brownell posts. Mickey Plyler made a point about Brownell the other day. He said that Brownell is too honest to the prospects. Instead of encouraging them and selling the Clemson brand, he points out their flaws. You can coach up the flaws. You have to sign them first.

Those were Mickeys words. Sometimes you have to tell the prospect what he needs to hear. Once in school, you can be more frank.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How does Mickey Plyler know what Brad tells recruits?

Mar 30, 2017, 1:27 PM

Does he sit in on meetings or read correspondence between Brownell and prospects?

Do you honestly believe that Brownell focuses on Clemson's faults and deficiencies when trying to persuade players to come to Clemson?

Judge he focuses on the players faults. All high school basketball players including superstars have faults. If a college coach wants to sign the kid, you don't point out his weaknesses to sell him. You sell your program on its merits and how you will make him better so he can make the pros.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
